School lunches to have more veggies, whole grains (AP)

ALEXANDRIA, Va. ? The first major nutritional overhaul of school meals in more than 15 years means most offerings ? including the always popular pizza ? will come with less sodium, more whole grains and a wider selection of fruits and vegetables on the side.

First lady Michelle Obama and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced the new guidelines during a visit Wednesday with elementary students. Mrs. Obama, also joined by celebrity chef Rachael Ray, said youngsters will learn better if they don't have growling stomachs at school.

"As parents, we try to prepare decent meals, limit how much junk food our kids eat, and ensure they have a reasonably balanced diet," Mrs. Obama said. "And when we're putting in all that effort the last thing we want is for our hard work to be undone each day in the school cafeteria."

After the announcement, the three went through the line with students and ate turkey tacos with brown rice, black bean and corn salad and fruit ? all Ray's recipes ? with the children in the Parklawn Elementary lunchroom.

Under the new rules, pizza won't disappear from lunch lines, but will be made with healthier ingredients. Entire meals will have calorie caps for the first time and most trans fats will be banned. Sodium will gradually decrease over a 10 year period. Milk will have to be low in fat and flavored milks will have to be nonfat.

Despite the improvements, the new rules aren't as aggressive as the Obama administration had hoped. Congress last year blocked the Agriculture Department from making some of the desired changes, including limiting french fries and pizzas.

A bill passed in November would require the department to allow tomato paste on pizzas to be counted as a vegetable, as it is now. The initial draft of the department's guidelines, released a year ago, would have prevented that. Congress also blocked the department from limiting servings of potatoes to two servings a week. The final rules have incorporated those directions from Congress.

Among those who had sought the changes were potato growers and food companies that produce frozen pizzas for schools. Conservatives in Congress called the guidelines an overreach and said the government shouldn't tell children what to eat. School districts also objected to some of the requirements, saying they go too far and would cost too much.

The guidelines apply to lunches subsidized by the federal government. A child nutrition bill signed by President Barack Obama in 2010 will help school districts pay for some of the increased costs. Some of the changes will take place as soon as this September; others will be phased in over time.

While many schools are improving meals already, others still serve children meals high in fat, salt and calories. The guidelines are designed to combat childhood obesity and are based on 2009 recommendations by the Institute of Medicine, the health arm of the National Academy of Sciences.

Vilsack said food companies are reformulating many of the foods they sell to schools in anticipation of the changes.

"The food industry is already responding," he said. "This is a movement that has started, it's gaining momentum."

Diane Pratt-Heavner of the School Nutrition Association, which represents school lunch workers, said that many schools won't count pizza as a vegetable even though they can. Students qualifying for subsidized meals must have a certain number of vegetables and other nutritious foods on their lunch trays.

"Most schools are serving fruit or vegetables next to their pizza and some schools are even allowing unlimited servings of fruit or vegetables," Pratt-Heavner said.

Celebrity chef Ray said she thinks too much has been made of the availability of pizza and French fries. The new rules will make kids' lunch plates much more nutrient dense, she said.

"The overall picture is really good," she said. "This is a big deal."

The subsidized meals that would fall under the guidelines are served as free and low-cost meals to low-income children and long have been subject to government nutrition standards. The 2010 law will extend, for the first time, nutrition standards to other foods sold in schools that aren't subsidized by the federal government. That includes "a la carte" foods on the lunch line and snacks in vending machines.

Those standards, while expected to be similar, will be written separately and have not yet been proposed by the department.

The next "Bachelorette": single mom Emily Maynard (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? ABC has announced Emily Maynard, the single mom who accepted Brad Womack's final rose in the season 15 finale of "The Bachelor," is single -- again -- and ready to mingle -- again -- on the eighth season of "The Bachelorette."

Maynard, the first single mom to star on "The Bachelorette," will have her choice of 25 bachelors on the show's upcoming season, which premieres in the spring.

Maynard is "hoping that third time is the charm," according to ABC's press release. Before her ill-fated engagement to Womack -- the two announced their breakup in June -- Maynard was engaged to NASCAR driver Ricky Hendrick, who died in a plane crash in 2004.

She was pregnant with their daughter, Ricki, now six, when Hendrick died, and is now hoping to meet "someone who makes her laugh, doesn't take himself too seriously and can be her best friend."

European LG Optimus Black Gingerbread update rolling out now

Android Central

It's been a long time coming, but European owners of the LG Optimus Black should finally be starting to see some Gingerbread. Optimus Blackl owners in India also should be seeing this update.

We first heard about the updates for the Optimus range way back in October, and now it's the turn of the Black to be pushed up to Gingerbread. The 2.3.4 update is rolling out as version V20N.

New features touted include improved power management, support for new media formats, shortcuts, widgets, better auto-focus on the camera and Google+ pre-installed.

The update is reported to be available currently via LG's software update tool right now. It still hurts a little that updates to Gingerbread are still rolling out, but LG has made no secret of its ICS plans.

Security in Tibetan region tightened, wounded hide (AP)

BEIJING ? About 30 Tibetans injured after Chinese police fired into a crowd of protesters in a restive southwestern region were seeking shelter Tuesday in a monastery while military forces surrounded the building, a Tibetan monk said.

Chinese authorities said Monday's unrest was caused by a "mob" and that overseas advocacy groups were twisting the truth about what happened in order to undermine the government.

The violence in Luhuo county in the politically sensitive Ganzi prefecture of Sichuan province comes amid high tensions after at least 16 Buddhist monks, nuns and other Tibetans self-immolated in the past year. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

A monk from Luhuo county's Shouling monastery, one of the most famous monasteries in the region, told The Associated Press by phone that 33 wounded people were being cared for in a clinic within the religious compound. At least 50 military vehicles were parked outside the monastery, he said.

"They want to take the injured people away but we won't let them because we don't trust them, we don't know what will happen to them," said the monk, who would not give his name out of fear of government retaliation. He said the monks worried about the massive security response.

"We are all in the monastery. Without the local residents around, the monks don't dare to go out," he said.

Accounts of Monday's violence differ, and independent confirmation is impossible due to a heavy security presence and lack of access to outsiders. Tibet activist groups said police opened fire on thousands of peaceful protesters, while the Chinese government says a far smaller number of Tibetans and police clashed after the Tibetans attacked a police station and smashed cars.

The monk at the Shouling monastery told the AP that the protesters had been peaceful until police fired into the crowd, killing one man. "When it all started we were only standing in the streets shouting slogans," he said. After police opened fire, the Tibetans responded by smashing police cars and windows, he said. But he rejected official accounts that five police were also injured in the clash.

He said Tibetans were frustrated by the government's tight restrictions on their religious practices.

"The Chinese government says we have religious freedom but we have no freedom at all. If we did, then they would not be talking badly about the Dalai Lama. They say you cannot listen to the Dalai Lama, if we have pictures of the Dalai Lama we have to take them down," he said. "This really hurts our feelings; they hurt our self-esteem."

The London-based International Campaign for Tibet said three Tibetans were killed and nine wounded, while another group, Free Tibet, said one died and up to 30 others were shot and wounded in Luhuo, also known as Draggo in Tibetan.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei slammed such groups, accusing them of exaggeration. Hong said order has been restored after one Tibetan died and four others were injured, and that five police were also wounded.

"Overseas forces of 'Tibet independence' have always fabricated rumors and distorted the truth to discredit the Chinese government with issues involving Tibet," Hong said in remarks carried by the official Xinhua News Agency.

Xinhua said more than 100 people, including monks, some armed with knives and stones, gathered to attack a police station after hearing rumors that three monks would set themselves on fire. They smashed two police vehicles and two fire engines and stormed shops, it said.

Ganzi is a rugged, deeply Buddhist region filled with monasteries that has been at the center of dissent for years. It is among the traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province and other parts of western China that have been closed to outsiders for months amid a massive security presence.

Many Tibetans resent Beijing's heavy-handed rule and the large-scale migration of China's ethnic Han majority to the Himalayan region. While China claims Tibet has been under its rule for centuries, many Tibetans say the region was functionally independent for most of that time.

Penn State Coach Bill O'Brien Issues Statement After Death Of Joe Paterno

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn State's football coach says following Joe Paterno in the job is an honor.

Bill O'Brien said in a statement Sunday after Paterno died that the school and all college football have suffered a great loss.

Paterno, who won more games than any other major college coach, was fired in November in the midst of a child sex abuse scandal that centered on a retired Penn State assistant coach. The school hired O'Brien, the New England Patriots offensive coordinator, this month.

He says Penn State is one of the game's iconic programs because "it was led by an icon in the coaching profession."

He also offers condolences to Paterno's family on behalf of the team.

Brad Pitt On Directing: 'Hell No'

Brad Pitt was on hand at Saturday night's Producer's Guild Awards, in part to support his partner Angelina Jolie, who was presented with the Stanley Kramer Award for her directorial debut, "In the Land of Blood and Honey." Directing has been a successful new venture for Jolie, but don't expect Pitt to follow in her foot steps behind the camera.

"Hell no," Pitt responded when asked on the red carpet if he had any interest in directing his own film, quite firm in his stance. "Just not interested."

The answer sets him apart from his best friends in Hollywood. George Clooney has become a successful director with four films to his name, including this year's critical hit "The Ides of March," while Ben Affleck has helmed two films and is working on his third, "Argo." Matt Damon has written a number of films -- he earned an Oscar with Affleck for "Good Will Hunting" -- and was supposed to make his directorial debut on a film he co-wrote with John Krasinski; he has since pulled out due to schedule conflicts, giving the job to Gus Van Sant.

Still, Pitt is far more than just an actor. He recently became the 5000th member of the Producer's Guild, and it was well deserved. He produced "Moneyball," working for years to make it happen, and also pulled the strings on "The Assassination of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford." Through his producing shingle Plan B Entertainment, he's also producing the zombie film "World War Z" and "Cogan's Trade," both of which he stars in.

Pitt has also had his name on a number of hits in which he did not act. He earned a Golden Globe for co-producing "The Departed," though he was ruled ineligible for the Oscar that the film eventually won. His company has backed Jolie's "A Mighty Heart"; Johnny Depp's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory"; "The Time Traveler's Wife"; and "Eat Pray Love."

While he has walked back those pesky rumors of a retirement from acting at 50-years-old, clearly, Pitt will be in Hollywood for the long haul.

Sail boats face piracy threats, head to safe haven

(AP) ? Boats competing in the Volvo Ocean Race were transported onboard an armed ship to the safe haven of the Maldives capital because of the threat of pirates along the east coast of Africa.

Dutch ship Happy Diamond was protected by barbed wire when it delivered the six-strong fleet safely to Male.

Race CEO Knut Frostad says "it has been a very tense and difficult time for us" and "now we're just looking forward to getting back to racing."

In late December, boats were transported on an armed ship through the Indian Ocean before completing the leg with a short sprint into Abu Dhabi in the first week of January.

Army suicides down, but violent crimes up

The number of suicides among soldiers has been leveling off but there's been a dramatic jump in domestic violence, sex crimes and other destructive behavior in a force that has been stressed by a decade of war, a new Army report said Thursday.

    7. Prince's tour of duty to reignite Falklands dispute?

"There's a lot of good news in this report, but there's also some bad news," Army Vice Chief of Staff Gen. Peter Chiarelli told a Pentagon press conference. "We know we've got still a lot of work to do."

Suicides among soldiers in the active duty, Guard and Reserve totaled 278 last year, down 9 percent from 2010.

"I think we've at least arrested this problem and hopefully will start to push it down," Chiarelli said.

But violent sex crimes and domestic violence have increased more than 30 percent since 2006 and child abuse by 43 percent.

"After 10 years of war with an all-volunteer force, you're going to have problems that no one could have forecasted before this began," he said.

Chiarelli was releasing a 200-page report for commanders, health care providers and other military leaders and meant to assess the physical and mental health condition of the force, disciplinary problems, and any gaps in how the Army deals with them.

Pentagon: Thousands of sex assaults unreported

It follows up on a 2010 report that said the Army was failing some soldiers by missing signs of trouble or by looking the other way as commanders tried to keep up with tight deployment schedules needed to fight in both Iraq and Afghanistan.

Chiarelli said commanders are now getting more troops into substance abuse programs; are kicking more out of the service for misconduct, and are barring others with alcohol and drug convictions from joining in the first place.

Other details from the report:

? Calling post-traumatic stress disorder an epidemic, it estimates that there could be 472,000 service members with the condition, half of them in the Army.

?Some 24,000 soldiers were referred to substance abuse programs in the 2011 budget year, ended in September.

?The Army had over 126,000 diagnosed cases of traumatic brain injury from 2000 to 2010. That included more than 95,000 mild cases such as concussions, 20,000 moderate cases and more than 3,500 in which there were severe, penetrating injuries.

Chiarelli said the military has taken "a huge step forward" with new screening procedures for troops who get concussions ? a frequent injury in wars where makeshift bombs have been insurgents' weapons of choice. Troops are now taken off the battlefield and held off for days or weeks until they recover, he said.

PSU trustees hope to address alumni concerns (AP)

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. ? Penn State's embattled Board of Trustees meets Friday for the first time since the chaotic week in November when shocking child sex abuse allegations were brought against a retired assistant football coach.

In the frantic first few days after authorities charged Jerry Sandusky, trustees ousted Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and school President Graham Spanier, and pledged to uncover the truth. Their actions have since left some anguished alumni and former players questioning the trustees themselves.

After remaining mostly silent the last two months, trustees this week began to divulge the reasons behind their actions, hoping to sway skeptics and critics seeking change.

Leadership positions will be up for election at Friday's meeting, which is open to the public. Also listed on the agenda is an overview of athletic programs.

"We have lots of things that we need to do in terms of the board and how it operates, and I think you'll see some positive things come out of that," trustee Mark Dambly said Thursday.

Some critics of the trustees have called for wholesale changes in how the board operates in order to better promote transparency. Trustee Stephanie Deviney said governance and the administration are among the topics trustees plan to consider.

The issues have also drawn unprecedented interest among potential candidates for three alumni-elected seats on the board up for a vote this spring.

Typically, about six to 12 candidates express interest. But the group Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship alone has received 30 applications seeking an endorsement. The group started in mid-November, growing out of what a spokeswoman said was a common frustration among members over a lack of due process at the school.

Comments this week by the trustees about why the board ousted Paterno on Nov. 9, four days after Sandusky was charged, failed to convince the alumni group, too.

Trustees interviewed Thursday by The Associated Press said they decided to force Paterno out in part because he didn't meet a moral obligation to do more to alert authorities about a child sex abuse allegation against Sandusky.

The trustees interviewed also cited statements from Paterno in the days and hours leading to his dismissal ? after nearly a half-century of leading the Nittany Lions ? that they felt challenged the trustees' authority. Board members saw that as inappropriate, particularly at a time of intense scrutiny over the Sandusky case.

Sandusky was charged with dozens of child sex abuse counts four days before Paterno was pushed out. The head coach had testified before a state grand jury about a 2002 allegation against Sandusky that was passed on to him by a graduate assistant.

A day after the graduate assistant, Mike McQueary, came to see him, Paterno relayed the accusations to his superiors, one of whom oversaw campus police. Board members didn't think that was enough.

"There's an obligation, a moral responsibility, for all adults to watch out for children, either your own or someone else," Dambly said. "It was in our opinion that Joe Paterno did not meet his moral obligation and for that reason ? me, personally for that reason, I felt he could no longer lead the university and it was unanimous."

But Dambly and three other trustees interviewed Thursday on the Penn State campus said they still intended to honor Paterno's accomplishments and contributions to the school. He won a Division I record 409 games over 46 seasons and the Paterno family has donated millions of dollars to the school.

"Obviously Joe Paterno is a worldwide icon and has done a tremendous amount for the university," trustee Joel Myers said. "We have sorrow and all kinds of emotions, empathy, sympathy for what has occurred. That's universal.

"But the university, this institution is greater than one person."

An attorney for Paterno on Thursday called the board's comments self-serving and unsupported by the facts. Paterno fully reported what he knew to the people responsible for campus investigations, lawyer Wick Sollers said.

"He did what he thought was right with the information he had at the time," Sollers said.

In a separate statement, Penn Staters for Responsible Stewardship said the board's comments have "done nothing but raise additional questions."

"We can conclude, that consequently, their hasty and panicked damage control efforts in the first days of November, and the uncomfortable position they found themselves in, being caught flat-footed, instead of in a proactive leadership position, led to the unjust firing of Joe Paterno, without so much as a conversation, let alone complete due process," the group's statement said.

The trustees described the long deliberations in the days leading up to Paterno's ouster as emotional and nerve wracking, echoing the confusion and anguish also felt among students and alumni as the scandal unfolded. They were shocked by the lurid details that had emerged about the case that week, after having been given a short briefing about Sandusky months earlier by Spanier and general counsel Cynthia Baldwin. That session lasted roughly 7 minutes and provided few insights, trustees said.

Paterno was dismissed the same day Spanier also departed under pressure. The board initiated an internal investigation into the Sandusky case and the role of Penn State officials.

Since then, some alumni and former players have been questioning the actions of the trustees ? criticism that boiled over in three town hall-style meetings last week hosted for alumni by new school President Rodney Erickson.

According to Dambly, trustees had been advised not to speak because of the ongoing investigations but changed their minds following the town hall sessions.

They began a series of interviews this week with media outlets. Also sitting in Thursday's interview with the AP was Lanny Davis, a prominent Washington attorney who has been retained by Erickson and the trustees as an adviser.

"We determined as a group that the Board of Trustees needed to answer the questions of what we knew, when we knew it and why we made the decisions that we made," Dambly said.

The trustees on Thursday cited three reasons for Paterno's immediate removal as head coach. Besides the moral obligation to do more in conjunction with reporting the 2002 allegation and statements issued by Paterno they felt may have challenged trustees' authority, the trustees also said there was concern that Paterno would not be able to properly represent the school if allowed to stay on as head coach the rest of the 2011 season.

According to The Washington Post, trustees vice chair John Surma told Paterno, "In the best interests of the university, you are terminated." Paterno hung up and repeated the words to his wife, who redialed the number.

"After 61 years he deserved better," Sue Paterno said. "He deserved better." Then she hung up.

According to Davis on Thursday, Surma never got the chance to say two more things that night: that he regretted having to tell him the decision over the phone; and that the school was going to honor his contract and retirement package as if he had retired at the end of 2011.

Dambly insisted Paterno was not fired, although he never appeared as coach again. He remains a tenured faculty member.

SEC clears Deutsche Borse-NYSE Euronext merger (AP)

WASHINGTON ? U.S. regulators have cleared the proposed merger of Deutsche Borse AG and NYSE Euronext Inc., which would create the world's biggest stock exchange operator, but the deal still needs European regulatory approval.

The Securities and Exchange Commission formally approved the $10 billion acquisition by Germany's Deutsche Borse of NYSE Euronext on Tuesday and made the decision public Wednesday.

The SEC said it reviewed the proposal carefully and found the merger would comply with securities laws and promote fair trading.

European Union officials have been closely examining whether the deal quashes competition, and they've shown few signs they'll allow it to proceed. NYSE Euronext owns the New York Stock Exchange and exchanges in Paris, Lisbon, Brussels and Amsterdam.

Both parties can walk away if the deal isn't completed by year's end.

Romney: Scrap campaign finance laws (AP)

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. ? Mitt Romney says he'd like to scrap campaign finance laws that have given rise to a war of independent attack ads from political action committees. Romney said he'd instead like to allow candidates to accept unlimited donations and take responsibility for their own words.

The comment came as Romney sparred with Newt Gingrich over inaccuracies in ads being bankrolled by super PACs.

Romney called the McCain-Feingold campaign finance law "a disaster." The law regulates campaign donations.

The former Massachusetts governor said the solution was to "let people make contributions they want to make to campaigns; let campaigns then take responsibility for their own words."

Gingrich has suggested he would also support unlimited donations to candidates so long as they had to report them the same day.

ASUS says the Transformer Prime won't do 3G, time travel and lasers still on the table

ASUS gave you the Transformer Prime TF700T and a frosty injection of Ice Cream Sandwich -- what more could you possibly want? 3G on your convertible tablet? Listen, ASUS has needs, too. The company has rebuked reports that such a device would be heading our way in the first quarter of 2012 -- or at any point in the foreseeable future -- have been greatly exaggerated. According to a statement by the company, "no such product exists on its current roadmap" -- and keep in mind, that roadmap navigating comes after a GPS upgrade.

Rupert Murdoch turns to Twitter to attack Obama (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Media baron Rupert Murdoch used his new Twitter account this weekend to attack the Obama Administration's opposition to parts of proposed legislation designed to combat Internet piracy.

"So Obama has thrown in his lot with Silicon Valley paymasters who threaten all software creators with piracy, plain thievery," News Corp's chairman and chief executive officer posted on his personal Twitter account Saturday.

Murdoch, whose media empire includes Fox TV, The Wall Street Journal, Fox Studios and the Sun newspaper in Britain, continued with several tweets, attacking Google as the "Piracy leader" for streaming movies free. In later tweets he called Google a "great company."

Google could not be reached for an immediate comment. The White House declined to make any other comment beyond their statement issued Saturday.

At issue are the concerns White House officials raised on Saturday about elements in the proposed Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) pending in Congress.

Google and Facebook already have decried as heavy-handed and Hollywood studios and music labels say is needed to save U.S. jobs.

In a blog posting, three advisers to President Barack Obama said they believed the act and similar bills could make businesses on the Internet vulnerable to litigation and harm legal activity and free speech.

"Any effort to combat online piracy must guard against the risk of online censorship of lawful activity and must not inhibit innovation by our dynamic businesses large and small," said the officials, including White House cyber-security czar Howard Schmidt.

The House of Representatives' SOPA bill aims to crack down on online sales of pirated American movies, music or other goods by forcing Internet companies to block access to foreign sites offering material that violates U.S. copyright laws.

U.S. advertising networks could also be required to stop online ads and search engines would be barred from directly linking to websites found to be distributing pirated goods.

Those who support stricter piracy rules reacted strongly to Saturday's White House statement, which darkened prospects for legislation already expected to struggle to clear Congress in an election year.

Schmidt and the other advisers said the Obama administration was ready to work with lawmakers on a narrower, more targeted approach to online piracy to ensure that legitimate businesses -- including start-up companies -- would not be harmed.

Murdoch, who opened his Twitter account this year, has used it to colorfully opine on a number of topics. Tweeting last week, Murdoch praised New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's latest proposal to overhaul the city's public schools, but referred to New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo as "chicken Cuomo."

He also admitted in a post to his company's mishandling of social network MySpace, which News Corp bought in 2005 for $580 million. Today the site is nearly irrelevant.

"...we screwed up in every way possible.." Murdoch posted last week.

Polaroid Showing Flexibility with SC1630 Android Camera (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | While Bloomberg is reporting legendary photography company Kodak is in talks to file bankruptcy, CNNMoney is reporting another classic photo company, Polaroid, is embracing the technology world and getting ready to deliver an Android-powered camera to the marketplace. Polaroid is trying to stay ahead of the steep digital curve brought on by technology, which is a lesson all companies should learn.

Transitioning business plans and market strategies is never an easy process, which is something Kodak is learning. As the Bloomberg report mentions, Kodak is due to report fourth-quarter earnings at the end of January, and nobody is really expecting good news. On the other side of the coin is Polaroid.

As CNNMoney reports, Polaroid is aware digital cameras are being replaced by smartphones. But the Android powered Polaroid SC1630 is basically a 16-mega pixel camera with a 3.2 inch LCD touch screen. The article also highlights the touch screen will allow full access to the Android app market. That is some serious resolution in a point-and-shoot camera, but to have Wi-Fi connectivity is even more of a treat.

Polaroid is showing flexibility and confidence the way savvy technology companies should. The Associated Press report that highlights Hulu moving further into the realm of original programming confirms that some companies know that shifting business models is important in the current world of sharing, mobile devices, and video streaming.

Sure the Polaroid SC1630 might not be an iPhone, and the device could arrive to flat sales. But Polaroid is not just standing by and watching the new market pass them by, which is admirable. There is plenty of room for gadgets in the tech world, and consumers always seem to sift through the madness to find the most trustworthy items. If the SC1630 can fill a void, it will succeed; just like the company behind the device.

China launches its first physical iron ore trading platform (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China launched its first physical iron ore trading platform on Monday in the latest move by the world's biggest iron ore consumer to strengthen its pricing power over a raw material long dominated by giant foreign suppliers.

The China Beijing International Mining Exchange (CBMX) launched the online platform together with the China Iron & Steel Association (CISA) and the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals Minerals & Chemicals Importers & Exporters.

CBMX also launched a new pricing index that it hopes will better reflect actual supply and demand and eliminate the effects of speculation and manipulation.

China has long believed that its position as the world's biggest iron ore consumer entitles it to a bigger say on prices, and the new platform is its latest move to wrest control from the big three global miners, Vale (VALE5.SA), BHP Billiton (BHP.AX)(BLT.L) and Rio Tinto (RIO.AX)(RIO.L), which between them control three quarters of global seaborne ore supplies.

"Monopoly practices and price manipulations have a massive impact on current iron ore prices and have also inflicted fatal harm on Chinese steel enterprises," Wang Xiaoqi, deputy chairman of CISA, said at the launch ceremony.

The platform will also attempt to provide a domestic rival to the GlobalOre trading exchange backed by mining giant BHP Billiton and based in Singapore. Wang said he hoped Chinese steel mills would choose the new platform.

Unlike rivals, trade in iron ore derivatives such as swaps and futures will not be permitted in order to "better reflect the price based on actual supply and demand," Wang said.

The exchange earlier said banks and financial organizations would not be allowed to participate in a bid to stem speculation.

China's major steel mills -- Baosteel, Hebei Steel, Wuhan Steel, Shougang and Angang -- as well as large iron ore traders including China Minmetals and Sinosteel have already agreed to become sponsor members of the platform.

However, none of the major foreign iron ore suppliers have yet become members, CISA's Wang told reporters.

"We welcome them to take part -- this is a global, open platform," he said. "This platform is currently only at the launch stage, and we already have domestic and foreign steel firms expressing interest."

CISA has long sought to resist the growing use of index pricing and what it calls the "financialisation" of the iron ore sector, favoring a return to more long-term contract pricing.

In May 2009, a number of large private traders set up China's first non-official iron ore trading platform in the port city of Rizhao and also planned to publish the country's first iron ore index.

But CISA soon shut the centre down, saying it would introduce speculation and destabilize the "benchmark" mechanism then used to set annual iron ore contract prices through negotiations between major buyers and suppliers.

Vale, BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto angered China by ditching the benchmark in 2010, switching instead to an index-based system in which contract prices are adjusted every three months.

While CISA finally ended its resistance to the new quarterly system last year, it remains suspicious, saying foreign indexes do not reflect the true state of the market.

CISA set up its own homegrown index last year, but it has struggled to establish itself in the face of more established gauges compiled by Platts, Metal Bulletin and The Steel Index.

Perry defends Marines accused of urinating on corpses (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Texas Governor Rick Perry, scrambling to keep his U.S. presidential bid alive, accused the Obama administration on Sunday of over-reacting to a videotape that shows four Marines appearing to urinate on dead Taliban fighters in Afghanistan.

"These kids made a mistake. There's not any doubt about it. They shouldn't have done it. It's bad," Perry told CNN's "State of the Union" program.

"But to call it a criminal act, I think, is over the top," said Perry, who faces a possible make-or-break performance in the South Carolina Republican presidential primary on Saturday.

The U.S. Marine Corps named an investigative officer last week to decide what, if any, charges to bring against the four Marines shown in the widely circulated videotape.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and other members of the Obama administration have denounced the action by the Marines.

"Defiling, desecrating, mocking, photographing or filming for personal use insurgent dead constitutes a grave breach of the (law of armed conflict)," Lieutenant General Curtis Scaparrotti, who heads day-to-day Afghan operations, wrote the troops last week.

Perry, a former Air Force pilot, said the four Marines should be appropriately punished. "But going after them as a criminal act, I think (is) really a bad message," he said.

Suggesting that armed conflict can alter personal behavior, Perry noted that "there is a picture" of legendary Army General George Patton urinating in the Rhine River in Germany near the end of World War Two.

"Although there's not a picture," Perry added, British Prime Minister Winston "Churchill did the same thing on the Siegfried line," a massive wall of German defenses.

Philly PD: 1 arrested in Winter Classic fan fight

(AP) ? Philadelphia police have arrested a man in the brawl between Flyers and Rangers fans following the Winter Classic game on Jan. 2.

A police spokeswoman says a man was taken into custody Thursday.

Police say an off-duty Woodbridge Township, N.J., police officer and Iraq veteran was left with injuries that required stitches.

In an edited version of a YouTube video of the altercation released by Philadelphia police, a man in a Flyers jersey throws the first punch after a verbal confrontation. The video ends with a Rangers fan lying stunned in the street outside a popular South Philadelphia cheesesteak shop.

Authorities did not immediately release the suspect's name. Police had been trying to track down three men involved in the altercation.

LONDON - West Ham has signed American defender George John on a two-month loan from FC Dallas.

The second-tier London club says it has brought John to Upton Park "with a view to a permanent signing."

John says on West Ham's website that he wants to "understand about English football and just adapt my game."

John hasn't played a competitive match since Oct. 26, saying it could "take two or three weeks to give me some time to develop and get back in the swing of things."

Golf Channel Records Highest Rating In Years With PGA Tour Opener

If anyone thinks that the PGA Tour's TV ratings would suffer in its first tournament of 2012 without its marquee player and a rising tide of Tebow mania, think again:

Multichannel News:

Golf Channel, coming off the most-watched year in its 17-year history, teed off the 2012 PGA Tour season by recording the highest-rated and most-watched opening round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions since the network began covering the event in 2007.

Golf Channel's first-round coverage on Friday from Hawaii garnered a 0.7 household rating and 705,000 average viewers, according to Nielsen data. That was up 27% over last year's previous best and more than 50% better than any previous opening round of this event on Golf Channel.

Surely NBC and Golf Channel executives are thrilled that they did so well in what seemed like a tough battle for viewers eyes this weekend. Without a doubt, the top sport in America is football, and its top league is of course the NFL, which began its playoffs this weekend. That following the annual orgy of college football bowl games leading up to the championship game last night. At the same time, college basketball, another sport of great interest, served up the start of the meat of its annual all-you-can-eat schedule when it started conference play. And, of course, both sports received plenty of hype beforehand with an endless parade of talking heads taking a look from every angle. But instead of choosing yammering pundits, plenty of people chose live competition in a sport that seemingly has no offseason.

In short, despite whatever happened over the weekend, it would seem at first that eyes would be in short supply, but GC and the Tour came out of it all smiles.

Venezuela's Chavez welcomes ally Ahmadinejad (Reuters)

CARACAS (Reuters) ? Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez dismissed a U.S. warning to avoid close ties with Iran on Sunday, denouncing what he said was Washington's attempt to dominate the world as he welcomed the Iranian president to the Latin American nation.

Iran's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad arrived at the start of a tour to shore up support from the region's leftist leaders, as tough new Western sanctions aim to isolate the Islamic republic and target its vital oil exports.

"A spokesman or spokeswoman in Washington from the State Department or the White House said it was not convenient for any country to get close to Iran. Well, the truth is, it made you laugh," Chavez said in a televised speech.

"They're not going to be able to dominate this world. Forget about it (President Barack) Obama, forget about it. It would be better to think about the problems in your country, which are many," he said.

"We are free. The people of Latin America will never again kneel, dominated by the imperial Yankee. Never again," he said, to applause from his audience at an oil processing facility.

Obama signed measures into law on New Year's Eve that will make it harder for most countries to buy Iranian oil.

The European Union is also expected to announce some type of ban on Iranian oil by the end of this month, and Washington has said that Ahmadinejad's planned tour of Venezuela, Cuba, Nicaragua and Ecuador showed Iran was "desperate" for friends.

"We are making absolutely clear to countries around the world that now is not the time to be deepening ties, not security ties, not economic ties, with Iran," a U.S. State Department spokeswoman said on Friday.

The sanctions are aimed at forcing Iran to halt its nuclear work, which the United States and its allies say is aimed at producing bombs. Iran says it is for power generation.

'A THREAT AGAINST US'

Ahmadinejad was met at Venezuela's Maiquetia International Airport by an honor guard, a red carpet, and a reception committee of about 100 people led by Vice-President Elias Jaua.

Wearing a grey suit and open-neck shirt, he did not speak to reporters but flashed a V-for-victory sign and pumped his fist in the air before climbing into his official car.

It remains to be seen how far Chavez would go in backing Iran's threat to close the Strait of Hormuz, the world's most important oil shipping lane, or how much he could undermine the sanctions by providing fuel or cash to Tehran.

In the past, Chavez has threatened to stop oil exports to the United States but has never followed through.

Other regional leaders due to receive Ahmadinejad, like Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega and Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa of Ecuador, have a similar ideological stance to Chavez, but fewer resources.

Ahmadinejad, who is subordinate to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on foreign policy, has said little about the rising tensions with the West, leaving it to Iran's military commanders to issue the most bellicose statements.

Under increasing fire from rival hardliners aiming to stop his supporters making gains at an election in March, Ahmadinejad will hope the foreign tour shows voters he still has international clout and is not, as his critics say, a lame duck.

The increasingly warm relations between Ahmadinejad and Chavez are a growing source of concern for Obama.

Last year, Washington imposed limited sanctions on Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA after accusing it of violating an earlier set of sanctions by sending at least two shipments of oil products to Iran.

That did nothing to curb PDVSA's crude exports to the United States, which amount to almost a million barrels a day.

Chavez highlighted Venezuela's many energy joint ventures with China during his broadcast from the huge Petromonagas oil facility. And he accused the U.S. government of trying to slow China's advance as a great power of the 21st century.

"The imperial Yankee is also trying to put the brakes on Russia, as an emerging power again after the fall of the Soviet Union. And the imperial Yankee is trying to slow the growth of Iran as an intermediate power," he said.

"They are inventing that Iran, Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua are preparing attacks against the United States ... You have to watch it carefully. It is a threat against us."
