The National Football League and the Hawaii Tourism Authority have named seven former players from the league to the inaugural class of the Hawaii NFL Greats.
The Hawaii NFL Greats is a designation that honors former players with ties to the state for their achievements on and off the field, HTA officials said in a statement. The NFL?s 2013 Pro Bowl is scheduled to be played at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu on Jan. 27.
The seven players are:
?Punahou School graduate Charlie Anne, who played for the Detroit Lions in the 1950s. He returned to Hawaii after he retired and coached at Punahou, Damien Memorial School, Radford High School and St. Anthony Junior-Senior High School on Maui.
?Blane Gaison, a former All-State quarterback who led the school to titles in 1974 and 1974. He played for the Atlanta Falcons for four seasons.
?Leo Goeas, a Kamehameha Schools and University of Hawaii graduate who played for the San Diego Chargers, Los Angeles and St. Louis Rams and Baltimore Ravens. He has also been a contract advisor for the NFL Players Association.
?Arnold Morgado, who played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1977-1980 and a Punahou graduate. He is also a former chairman of the Honolulu City Council, a financial advisor for Merrill Lynch and is now coaching football at Punahou.
?Jim Nicholson, a graduate of Saint Louis School and a former St. Louis Rams, Chiefs, Chargers and San Francisco 49ers player. Her is now the head of the state?s Labor Relations Board.
?Herman Wedemeyer, a Saint Louis High School graduate and finalist in the 1945 finalist for the Heisman Trophy. He played for the All-American Football Conference?s Los Angeles Dons before he returned to Hawaii and got involved in politics.
