HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) ? A former Penn State assistant coach says that longtime football coach Joe Paterno told him the university mishandled its response to the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal.

Mike McQueary testified Monday as a star witness in a hearing for three former Penn State officials accused in a cover-up.

McQueary says that Paterno told him "Old Main screwed up" ? a reference to Penn State's administration. He also says Paterno warned him the university would try to scapegoat him.

McQueary's appearance was the highlight of the daylong hearing. Testimony will continue Tuesday.

Former Penn State president Graham Spanier (SPAN'-yer), retired university vice president Gary Schultz and ex-athletic director Tim Curley are accused of failing to tell authorities that McQueary reported seeing Sandusky molest a child in a university locker-room shower and of trying to cover it up. They say they're innocent.

One good thing about habits is the fact that habits can be learned and they can also be unlearned. It is correct to say that, if we can identify and learn the habits that make people successful, then we can also get the kind of successful results they get.

What do successful losers have in common? What habits can the rest of us learn from their long-term weight loss success? Listed below are the 7 habits researchers have identified in successful losers.

They are motivated to change

People don?t change unless they see the need for change. According to health psychologists, people go through different stages of change before they adopt a new health behavior (Prochaska and colleagues). Every successful loser has a point where they come to the realization that, they need to change something. For some the motivation for change may come as an order from their doctor, for some the motivation may be to lose weight and look good, while others are motivated because they love their families and want to stay alive and healthy for them. They believe in the benefits

Beliefs are powerful driving forces. When we believe in something we go all the way to make it happen. Starting a new lifestyle is not really easy unless you believe in the benefits that come with the new lifestyle. It is natural for us as humans to cling to the familiar and resist anything that threatens our sense of stability; we don?t usually welcome change with open arms. Believing in the benefits of a lifestyle is so important, and that is one of the habits of successful losers. If you are familiar with my weight loss story, you would know that my main motivations were the benefits that come with healthy lifestyle. I read a book which convinced me about the health benefits of exercise and clean eating, that I changed the course of my life in a few months.

They believe they can

Self-belief is what makes people do the impossible.? Successful losers have confidence in their own abilities. Self-confidence is defined as ?the belief that you can be successful at something (for example, the belief that you can be successful in sports and physical activities and can improve your physical fitness)? ? Corbin and Welk.? You have to believe it before you can do it; faith is the substance of things hoped for, and hope is what keeps us from falling apart when the going gets tough.

They set goals

Successful losers are goal setters. They understand the importance of aiming their efforts at something.? Successful losers set small manageable goals, and as each goal is reached they celebrate it and set new goals. The goals can be as small as walking 20 minutes a day, or as big as running a marathon. Every goal achieved reinforces a successful loser?s success. That is why some people can?t understand why successful losers keep pushing fitness boundaries, some people might think they are overdoing it, but in most cases it is the pure joy of conquering new fitness territories that motivate them to push harder.

They keep track

Self-monitoring is another habit all successful losers have in common because, records don?t lie. Successful losers keep track of their foods and physical activities. They also keep records of weight and different body measurements. They know that what can be tracked can be managed.? Seeing the difference between where you are coming from and where you are now, is big motivating factor to a successful loser.

They enlist social support

Research has shown that those who enlist the support of friends and family are more successful with weight loss than those who do not. As a fitness instructor I have seen people achieve amazing results because they have group support, whether it is 2-3 people meeting together for a walk or whether it is being part of a group fitness class, people? lose more weight when they have the support of others. A phenomenon) that?s happening right now is the virtual support groups springing up all over.? There are support groups on BB, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. Successful losers don?t joke with social support, whether it is from family, close friends or virtual friends, they keep themselves accountable to their support groups.

They continue in those habits that make them successful

Successful losers are able to maintain their weight loss in the long-term because, they don?t go on and off. They understand the journey to health and fitness is a long-term one, they are not looking for quick fixes, and weight loss magic. They exercise consistently, and make healthy eating a daily habit. No wonder they are able to maintain their weight in the long- term.

In Conclusion

In the final analysis, we are what we consistently do. Like Aristotle rightly said ?We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit?. When it comes to losing weight, your gain is proportional to your effort, no effort no gain, small effort equal small gain, and big effort will produce big gains. BAGLEY, Ala. -- Jim Mortenson and his wife, Mickey, are a typical couple. They enjoy spending time with their grandchildren, purchasing or creating things for their home and gardening ... on their roof.

The Mortensons have spent the last 30 years living in an underground house they built themselves over an eight-year span. During the oil embargo in the 1970s, the Mortensons and the rest of the country were struggling with the high price of fuel and looking for ways to cut usage. Then Mortenson saw a magazine article that talked about underground living and the low cost of heating and cooling costs and they were intrigued.

"We told our families, and they didn't tell us we were crazy," he laughed. "We were young and didn't know what we were doing."

So the couple set out to build their house themselves. It would take eight years and would still be in "rough" shape when they finally moved in, according to Mortenson.

"By then I think the inspector just felt sorry for us so he let us move in," he said.

The house is constructed of concrete walls poured full of concrete and heavily waterproofed.

The outside has a facade of small rocks stacked to create a more organic look than the concrete blocks.

The home is shaded and rock paths, ferns and small water features surround the home's front and back entrances and lead to the roof, which is stacked one to two feet deep in soil.

The couple has decorated the roof area with numerous tropic plants, such as banana trees and several types of elephant ears, which Mortenson calls one of his favorite plants.

Other than a few specialty items, the couple did the work themselves and experimented a lot to see what they liked and what worked for them.

The original floors were concrete that had been grooved and stained to look like tile, which was almost unheard of at the time. Those floors have been replaced with tile or hardwood now.

The kitchen floor is a series of old ladders that Jim Mortenson sourced from the phone company where he worked.

When they upgraded their systems to computers, the ladders became obsolete and the Mortensons got the idea to use them as a unique and cheap flooring. In fact, like the house itself, virtually every piece in the home has a story behind it, many of them relating to family members.

The model ships throughout the house were built by Jim's dad, the dining table and chairs, candleholders and many other metal items were constructed by their brother-in-law, who passed away.

"He started that table and chairs, and before he died, he taught me some of the stuff he knew. I promised to finish it once he was gone," Mortenson said. That makes the iron table and chairs a precious keepsake, as is the blacksmith shop that Mortenson inherited and relocated to his property.

As for the original reason for the building, the Mortensons said it is easy and cheap to cool in the summer and usually the biggest issue is the high humidity.

For heat, the couple installed a furnace a few years ago but were careful to hide it to avoid destroying the view around the home. The couple also has underground power and utility lines to keep the bamboo from interfering and to protect the "blending into nature" view.

WestConn Grad Awaits Call To Play Baseball For Greece

DANBURY, Conn. -- Western Connecticut State University graduate Angelo Tsingerliotis of Norwalk is awaiting a call on whether he will play for the Greek national baseball team in the European Championship for the second time.

Tsingerliotis, also a Trinity Catholic High School graduate, played for Greece in the European Championships in 2012. He is hoping to represent the country of his ancestors again in the 2014 games in Prague.

?Playing for the country of my heritage was one of the most amazing experiences of my life, one that I will remember forever,? Tsingerliotis said in a statement. ?It was much more than representing a town, a state or even a college. I was representing millions in Greece with the word ?Hellas? on the front of my jersey."

Tsingerliotis, who played for the men's soccer team at WestConn in Danbury, was selected for the 2012 Greek national team after a successful tryout in Athens. He had a batting average of more than .300 for Spartakos Glyfadas, a leading team in Greece?s Champions League.

The highlight of the tournament was his start in a game against Croatia, where he delivered a hit and drove in a run in a 7-2 victory, Tsingerliotis said.

His tournament experience was cut short by a shoulder injury, but the excitement of being a member of the Greek national team has lingered long after the competition?s end.

?After the games, kids would line up and we would sign autographs for them, and just seeing their faces was worth a million words,"?Tsingerliotis said in the statement.

Tsingerliotis will return to his high school alma mater this fall as an assistant soccer coach for the Trinity Catholic boys soccer team.

Just when Australia thought things could not get any worse, they were on Saturday night forced to respond to reports of more bad behaviour by disgraced batsman David Warner.

Warner, who punched England opener Joe Root in a nightclub ahead of the Ashes, was hoping to return to the Australia side for the third Test at Old Trafford, starting this Thursday.

But on Saturday he had to be separated from wicketkeeper Thami Tsolekile during his 33-run second innings in the drawn match between Australia A and South Africa A in Pretoria, with umpires forced to call a halt to the game twice. Warner is due to rejoin Australia?s Ashes squad on Monday and, after making 193 in his first innings, was widely expected to play at Old Trafford. But this latest show of ill-discipline could change things.

Game on for surveillance? Privacy advocates concerned over new ...

When it comes to privacy and security, "video game consoles pose problems akin to those of mobile phones," a spokesman for the Electronic Frontier Foundation says.

As government, civil libertarians and tech companies continue to wrangle over revelations about the National Security Agency's electronic surveillance of computers and phones, little has been said about another key digital member of the American family household: video game consoles.

That may not be as much of an issue with current-generation hardware ? the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 or Wii. But as Sony's promise to integrate the PlayStation 4 with Facebook and Microsoft's introduction of Skype to the Xbox One indicate, consoles are becoming as connected as the other devices we use every day. But in addition to regularly connecting to the Internet, the next-gen systems from Microsoft and Sony, due out later this year, will feature sophisticated motion- and voice-controlled technology engineered to recognize individuals.

Microsoft has said that its new Kinect, which comes bundled with the Xbox One, is so precise that it will even be able to monitor users' heart rates.

"Video game consoles pose problems akin to those of mobile phones because users often have very little visibility into what the devices are doing and very little control over the software running on the devices," Seth Schoen, a senior staff technologist at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, said in an email to NBC News.

Not only that, new consoles may be increasingly of interest to those who would like to get more spy data. "They increasingly have audio and video sensors watching what goes on in people's living rooms," wrote Schoen. "And we know that governments have been discussing the idea of being able to tap in-game conversations for years, in keeping with the pattern of trying to develop the ability to spy on each and every communications medium."

Game critics have been raising issues about user privacy and security on the PS4 since last February, when it was announced. At that time, David Perry, CEO of Gaikai, a cloud computing company and Sony subsidiary, said that "the PlayStation Network will get to know you by understanding your personal preferences and the preferences of your community."

The PS4 was designed to track its users and turn them into better, more efficient consumers by doing things like pre-loading games that the PlayStation Network predicts someone will like ? and that's not to mention the console's promised integration with social networks like Facebook.

Sony has not commented directly on the privacy policies regarding the PS4. NBC News asked Sony about privacy and the PS4. The company said it will have a privacy policy in place at a later date, and it plans to provide more information at that time.

Since the PS4 reveal in February, the company has announced new features like "The PlayRoom," a pre-installed "augmented reality" app that scans the living room with the PlayStation camera. And while Sony didn't make the camera a system requirement in the same way that the Kinect is for the Xbox One, it's had little to say about how users will be able to control what, exactly, the camera keeps track of.

Microsoft, meanwhile, has repeatedly insisted that users do have a good deal of visibility and control over how the Xbox One and Kinect will operate. While the Kinect's default settings initially led some critics to suggest the device will "always be listening," a Microsoft spokesperson told NBC News that, with the exception of the games and other applications that "require Kinect functionality to operate," users can essentially render the device inert.

"With Xbox One and Kinect, the user knows when the camera or mic is on, the user has the ability to turn them off, and when it comes to the raw data produced by Kinect, the user controls whether it is shared with Microsoft," the spokesperson said.

Because the Kinect still has to be connected to the Xbox One at all times, however, much of this user customization of its privacy policies is at the software level. Microsoft maintains that, "just like other devices with cameras or mics, whether or not you can unplug or remove it from the device is immaterial if the product is configured in a way that protects users? privacy."

Hardware vs. software warning

But Christopher Soghoian, senior policy analyst and principal technologist at the American Civil Liberties Union, is not convinced.

"Companies may have the best of intentions," Soghoian said. While gaming consoles may be identical to any other device with a camera or microphone, he said that the key difference with consoles is "where the cameras are" ? in people's living rooms and bedrooms.

"Putting a camera on a toaster isn't as much of a concern because you tend to not make food nak#d for the simple reason that hot oil and nudity don't go well together," he said. But when it comes to something like the Kinect or the PlayStation camera, "the only other place that's more compromising is the bathroom."

The "obvious solution," he believes, should be a hardware-level warning like an LED indicator that notifies users whenever the Kinect is turned on and watching a user in one way or another.

"There's a difference between a software warning and a hardware one," Soghoian said. "A software warning can lie to you, a hardware one cannot."

Microsoft told NBC News that the new Kinect ? like its predecessor on the Xbox 360 ? will have an indicator on the device to alert users when the device is turned on and active. But if you're still not convinced that such warnings can be thwarted, Soghoian said that users can always put a sock over the device to block its camera.

Microsoft says that it couldn't really share any compromising user data simply because it won't have any of that data in the first place.

"Microsoft can only be compelled to provide data that it already stores or processes," the company said in an emailed statement to NBC News. "If a government agency wanted to access the data that is stored and processed locally on the console, they would first need to be in physical possession of the console. This data isn?t stored or processed by Microsoft servers so we couldn?t provide it in response to a government order served on us."

In addition, "for both legal and practical reasons we don?t believe we would be obliged to provide data that we store on our servers in an anonymized fashion," the company said. "And finally, absent a new law, we don?t believe the government has the legal authority to compel us or any other company that makes products with cameras and microphones to start collecting voice and video data, and we?d aggressively challenge in court any attempts to try and force us to do so."

To Schoen, of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the real issue is consumer awareness: People need to stop viewing consoles as simple playthings and appreciate the fact that these devices pose the same privacy concerns as any other modern technology now does.

"It's more difficult to get people to worry about the loss of control over their video game consoles than about the loss of control over their mobile phones because consoles are seen as 'toys,'" Schoen said.

San Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown will lose $2 million of his 2013 salary because he lacked knowledge of a clause in his contract that required him to participate in the 49ers? offseason workout program. He had been working out in the offseason at his home in Texas instead of at the 49ers? facility in Santa Clara, Calif.

And he didn?t find out about it until Thursday morning ? via Twitter.

Despite the bizarre fiasco, Brown participated in practice on Thursday. According to The Sacramento Bee?s Matt Barrows, Brown immediately fired his agent, Brian Overstreet, upon learning of the mix-up.

?I no longer have an agent as of now,? Brown said after practice. ?? No one wants to leave money on the table. If I would have known the clauses in my contract and that?s what agents get paid to do ? to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can?t do as far as workouts and OTAs and things of that sort. That?s what he got paid to do, he didn?t do that, so in my opinion he had to be let go.?

Without his contract?s escalator clause, Brown will earn $925,000 this season. The 28-year-old is coming off the best two seasons of his career, starting all 32 games while intercepting six passes.

He is set to become a free agent after the season.

Oregon to spend $20 million promoting health law

SALEM, Ore. (AP) -- Two local folk singers, strumming guitars and crooning about the virtues of Oregon, have become the first tool in a $20 million campaign to convince Oregon's uninsured to buy health insurance.

Musicians Laura Gibson and Matt Sheehy appear in ads that are now on heavy rotation in all of Oregon's television markets. The ads are the beginning of an intensifying push to introduce the public to Cover Oregon, the online marketplace where individuals and small businesses can shop for health insurance coverage and see whether they qualify for financial assistance under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul.

Obama's overhaul will require nearly all Americans to have health insurance by Jan. 1 or pay a penalty.

"These ads are what we like to call our 'hello' to Oregon," said Amy Fauver, chief communications officer for Cover Oregon. "It's really about building awareness of the name Cover Oregon and also generating a positive sentiment. We know that most people have not heard of Cover Oregon."

The Oregon Legislature created Cover Oregon, known officially as the Oregon Health Insurance Exchange, as a public corporation in 2011. It's currently funded primarily by hundreds of millions of dollars in federal grants but is supposed to eventually be self-sufficient.

The introductory ads feature Gibson and Sheehy singing about Oregon's iconic landmarks, independent spirit and healthy lifestyle. The two ads now airing will soon be joined by a third featuring Portland-based hip-hop duo Lifesavas, Fauver said.

They hardly mention Cover Oregon nor explain what it is, instead trying to create a positive vibe associating the brand with Oregon's cultural identity. An educational campaign will follow next month to help people understand what it means for them, Fauver said.

Cover Oregon officials say website traffic surged six-fold to 10,424 visits after the ads began airing.

The In addition to the ad campaign, the federal government is offering grants to community health centers that serve the poor to help them educate their patients. The state is also awarding outreach grants to local organizations that want to help get people to sign up for health coverage. More than 70 organizations applied for grants, and state officials are currently reviewing their materials, Fauver said.

Oregon has embraced Obama's health care overhaul and was one of the first states to agree to build an exchange. Cover Oregon expects to spend $20 million on advertising, public relations and community outreach, almost all of it in federal money. At $5.29 per resident, Oregon's advertising budget is seventh-highest in the country, according to records from all 50 states compiled by The Associated Press.

Nearly 600,000 people in Oregon are uninsured, 15 percent of the population. Starting Jan. 1, people making less than 138 percent of the federal poverty level ? $23,550 a year for a family of four ? will be eligible for the Oregon Health Plan, the state's Medicaid program. Anyone else who doesn't get insurance from an employer or Medicare will be able to purchase it through Cover Oregon, and people with low and moderate incomes will qualify for the federal subsidies.

State officials expect 320,000 people to get insurance through Cover Oregon next year, including some people who are currently uninsured and others who get already get health insurance on the individual market.

The success of Cover Oregon will depend on enrolling lots of young and healthy people. If only the sick sign up, critics warn that premiums will skyrocket and make it financially unsustainable.

Shrien Dewani awaits ruling on bid to fight extradition to South Africa

Shrien Dewani will discover on Wednesday whether his latest bid to delay his extradition to South Africa to face trial over his wife's death has succeeded.

The 33-year-old is suspected of ordering the killing of his new wife Anni, 28, who was shot as the couple travelled in a taxi on the outskirts of Cape Town in November 2010.

On Wednesday at Westminster magistrates court, chief magistrate Howard Riddle is expected to reveal his latest decision as to whether Dewani should be extradited.

The businessman has been receiving treatment for depression and post-traumatic stress disorder at psychiatric hospitals near Bristol since his wife's death.

Prosecutors claim it would not be "oppressive" to extradite the businessman to face trial, and that there has been a "significant and sustained improvement" in his mental health in recent months.

Hugo Keith QC, for the South African government, admitted Dewani was not fit to plead, but argued that this should not stop the extradition process.

However, Dewani's defence team has argued that the decision should be delayed for six months to avoid his condition worsening.

During a full extradition hearing earlier this month, Professor Nigel Eastman said: "If he goes now, he will be in a poorer state than if he goes in six months' time. If he goes to South Africa and does not improve, he is at risk of being chronically ill and chronically unfit to plead."

It emerged during the four-day hearing that while resident at Fromeside and Blaise View mental health units Dewani was allowed to walk home every day, and a camper van was set up in the grounds where he would spend long periods of time.

Riddle ruled in 2011 that Dewani should be sent back to South Africa, but an appeal against the decision was successful and he was ordered to look again at the case.

So far three men have been convicted over Mrs Dewani's death.

Last year, South African Xolile Mngeni was convicted of premeditated murder for shooting her. Prosecutors claimed he was a hitman hired by Dewani to kill his wife, which Dewani has consistently denied.

Taxi driver Zola Tongo was jailed for 18 years after he admitted his part in the killing, and another accomplice, Mziwamadoda Qwabe, also pleaded guilty to murder and was given a 25-year prison sentence.

The family of Mrs Dewani will be at the court hearing on Wednesday, her sister Amy Hindocha has said.

She told ITV's DayBreak programme that her brother Anish and her parents had travelled to London from their home in Sweden to see the latest court appearance.

Speaking of her father, who has been to every court hearing in England and South Africa, she said: "He just wants to know what happened, it's a desire that has taken time away from everything else."

Anish Hindocha said: "We hope for the best outcome today. I can somehow see a light where we will get answers."

Senate set to finish work on student loan deal

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Borrowing for tuition, housing and books would be less expensive for college students and their parents this fall but the costs would start climbing almost immediately under a deal the Senate was poised to pass Wednesday.

The bipartisan proposal lawmakers were considering would link interest rates on federal student loans to the financial markets, providing lower interest rates right away but higher ones if the economy improves as expected. Lawmakers had begun considering last-minute changes that were unlikely to be included and seemed to be on track to pass the full bill by early evening.

Under the bipartisan deal, undergraduates this fall could borrow at a 3.9 percent interest rate. Graduate students would have access to loans at 5.4 percent, and parents could borrow at 6.4 percent. Those rates would rise as the economy picks up and it becomes more expensive for the government to borrow money.

Rates on subsidized Stafford loans doubled to 6.8 percent July 1 because Congress could not agree on a way to keep them at 3.4 percent. Without congressional action, rates would stay at 6.8 percent.

The compromise that came together during the last few weeks could be a good deal for students through the 2015 academic year. After that, interest rates are expected to climb above where they were when students left campus in the spring, if congressional estimates prove correct.

"That's the same thing credit card companies said when they sold zero-interest rate credit cards. ... The bill comes due," said Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass. "All students will end up paying far higher interest rates on their loans than they do now."

Warren was among the liberal Democrats who labeled the White House-backed proposal a bait-and-switch measure that would lure in new borrowers with low rates now but would cost future students. Throughout the morning and afternoon, they stood to oppose the compromise.

"The bill before us today offers students and families lower student loan interest rates in the near-term but we can fully expect higher student loan interest rates in the years to come," said Sen. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis. "Why on earth would we want to expose our students to higher rates?"

Added Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif.: "Don't kid yourself. ... This so-called deal makes it worse."

The White House's allies instead suggested the new formula is better than the status quo.

"Don't let anyone tell you that this is bad deal for students. This is not a bad deal for students. If we don't pass this, students will pay 6.8 percent on their loans. With this bill, they'll pay 3.86 percent. You tell me which is the better deal," said Sen. Tom Harkin, the Iowa Democrat who chairs the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.

Harkin said the legislation is not what he would have written if he had the final say but he also said that he recognizes the need to restore the lower rates on students before they return to campus for classes.

"It's the best that we can do," Harkin said on the Senate floor. "If we don't pass this today, there will be one sure effect: student loans will be almost twice what they would be under this bill."

The White House and its allies said the new loan structure would offer lower rates to 11 million borrowers right away and save the average undergraduate $1,500 in interest charges. Democratic leaders expected widespread defections from within their ranks but expected Republican support would help them win passage.

But there was no denying the new structure could cost future students if the economy improves as expected and interest rates climb.

"I suspect they will. They're pretty low right now," said Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del. "Who knows? We don't know."

As part of the compromise, Democrats won a protection for students by capping rates at a maximum 8.25 percent for undergraduates. Graduate students would not pay rates higher than 9.5 percent, and parents' rates would top out at 10.5 percent.

Using Congressional Budget Office estimates, rates would not reach those limits in the next 10 years.

Most Senate Republicans who pushed for interest rates to be linked to the financial markets were likely to vote for the measure. It was negotiated by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and GOP Sens. Richard Burr of North Carolina and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, the top Republican on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Sen. Angus King, an independent from Maine, also joined the talks and the lobbying effort for the deal's approval.

"You want to help the middle class? This is where the middle class is," Manchin told his colleagues. "We all came here to help our constituents."

A bit later, Burr asked his colleagues: "What's best for students? I think you'll find it is this bipartisan bill."

The compromise negotiated in the Senate closely hews to what House Republicans passed this year, and that was a sticking point for some liberals.

Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., pushed for an extension of the current 3.4 percent rate so lawmakers could address the subject this fall during the revision of the Higher Education Act.

"At some point, it's going to be a much worse deal," Reed said. "It goes up and up and up and up."

The Congressional Budget Office estimated the bill as written would reduce the deficit by $715 million over the next decade. During that same time, federal loans would be a $1.4 trillion program.

"We've got to get out of the business of making profits of struggling families who want nothing more than to be able to send their kids to college," said Sen. Bernie Sanders, a Vermont independent who caucuses with Democrats. "This legislation only makes a bad situation worse."

MetLife: 75% of Charlotte jobs so far filled with local hires

More than 100 MetLife Inc. employees will report to their first day of work in Charlotte on Wednesday ? but about 75% of them already call the Queen City home.

MetLife, the giant insurer relocating 1,300 jobs here, says its first batch of workers includes three-fourths new hires from the Charlotte area. The other 25% are relocating here from elsewhere, including many from MetLife offices that will shutter in other places.

The breakdown was a key point of emphasis when I spoke to MetLife Executive Vice President Eric Steigerwalt earlier today. After all, MetLife is receiving an incentive package valued at more than $100 million, paid mostly from rebates on employee income taxes, for hiring here. So no doubt its expected to hire locally.

"We have been thrilled with the talent that we're seeing, the resumes we're seeing," Steigerwalt says.

MetLife announced in March it would relocate 2,600 jobs to North Carolina, split evenly between a new retail insurance headquarters in Charlotte and a technology campus near Raleigh. The Charlotte jobs will average $58,000 in annual wages.

Steigerwalt moved permanently to the Charlotte area two weeks ago. His executive team is in the process of relocating, too.

He says about 250 Charlotte job openings are still posted on the company's career website, inclduding vacancies in product development, sales, marketing, finance, legal and operations.

"We want to see as many resumes as we can see," he says. "Anyone who is interested in working for this great company, now is the time to get to us."

Steigerwalt will address 110 new hires tomorrow as they begin their first day of employee orientation. Most are based in a temporary office in Ballantyne Corporate Park. Some are in SouthPark.

Two Chinese teens aboard the doomed Asiana flight into San Francisco were best friends who died as they lived ? by each other?s side.

Ye Mengyuan, a talented 17-year-old gymnast, and 16-year-old Wang Linjia, a physics marvel, hailed from China?s eastern Zhejiang Province and had been inseparable for four years.

Both were found dead on the tarmac, their bodies at least a mile apart, after the Boeing 777 crashed short of the runway Saturday.

Officials said it was possible one of the girls was run over by a fire truck rushing to the scene of the crash and killed.

?There was a possibility one of two fatalities might have been contacted by one of our apparatus at one point during the incident,? San Francisco Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Dale Carnes said Monday.

More than 180 of the 307 people aboard the plane were injured.

San Francisco Police Officer Jim Cunningham was hailed as a hero Monday after witnesses described him racing onto the wrecked plane without any protective gear and rescuing passengers as the aircraft began to burn.

But investigators were also examining reports by a crew member that two of the inflatable escape slides deployed inward instead of outward following the crash, pinning two flight attendants underneath.

Cabin manager Lee Yoon-hye said crew members used axes to deflate the slides, which were suffocating one of the attendants.

The best friends were seated near the back of the aircraft, which crashed tail first, said National Transportation Safety Board chief Deborah Hersman.

?The two fatalities were located in seats toward the rear of the aircraft,? Hersman said. ?This is an area of the aircraft that was structurally significantly damaged. It?s an area where we?re seeing a lot of the critical or serious injuries.?

Officials said the distance between where the two bodies were found suggested one may have been thrown from the wreckage. An autopsy on both girls will not be completed for a few weeks, the San Mateo County coroner said.

The agonizing loss was only exacerbated by the latest details regarding the pilots at the helm of Asiana Flight 214.

The inexperienced pilot flying the plane was supervised by a ?senior pilot? who himself was on his first flight as a trainer. Lee Jung-min had just received his training certificate in June, a spokeswoman for the South Korean carrier said.

He was overseeing Lee Gang-guk, who had a mere 43 hours of experience flying a Boeing 777 and was attempting his first landing in San Francisco, the spokeswoman confirmed. Gang-guk had nearly 10,000 hours flying other planes.

Hersman reiterated Monday that pilot error was one of many possible causes of the crash. She added that the pilots were to be interviewed Monday.

Ye?s and Wang?s families, meanwhile, were en route to San Francisco from Shanghai.

?I?m going to go see my daughter,? Wang?s father, Wang Wensheng, said.

The teenage girls had planned to participate in a three-week exchange program in Los Angeles.

Citrix's XenDesktop 7 available on Microsoft's Windows Azure

Citrix on Monday outlined that its latest XenDesktop 7 virtualization software will be available on Microsoft's Windows Azure cloud platform.

With the move, XenDesktop's remote desktop services on Azure sessions can have live roaming and multiple devices.

XenDesktop 7 was outlined at Citrix's Synergy confab in May. Adding a cloud session option will give Citrix another deployment model for virtual desktops.

For Citrix, Azure support gives XenDesktop more of an audience among smaller enterprises as cloud computing grows. Enterprise customers will have a familiar Windows Azure experience and optimization for Microsoft workloads.

Two Chinese teenagers reportedly killed in Asiana jet crash

BEIJING, July 7 (Xinhua) -- An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777 that burst into flames after it slammed into the runway at San Francisco airport on Saturday morning has left two Chinese middle school students killed and 182 passengers injured.

Based on information obtained from the boarding passes, two female middle school students from Jiangshan City, Zhejiang Province, died in the accident, but the identities of the victims have yet been confirmed by DNA tests.

The two girls were travelling with a group of middle school students and their teachers from Jiangshan on Asiana Airlines Flight 214 to take part in a summer camp in the United States.

Meanwhile, 30 students and six teachers from north China's Shanxi Province were aboard the same flight, the provincial education department said Sunday.

A total of 141 Chinese citizens were among the 291 passengers aboard the flight when the jumbo jet broke off its tail and caught fire before braking to a bumpy stop that gave time to most of the passengers to slide down the emergency doors.

A Chinese passenger that survived the crash recalled that the jet caught fire at around the 20th row inside the aircraft, so he believed that the seriously injured might be sitting before the 20th row.

"It is incredible and very lucky that we have so many survivors. But there are still many that are critically injured," said San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, who sent condolences to the families of those killed and injured.

Some 182 people were injured and have been sent to nine hospitals near the airport. Forty-eight people remained in serious condition, Lee told reporters.

The Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco has set up an emergency team to assist the Chinese passengers and coordinate with the local municipal government on the aftermath of the crash.

Asiana Airlines President Yoon Yong-doo bowed and apologized over the crash landing at a televised press conference on Sunday.

"I am bowing my head and extending my deep apology" to the passengers, their families and the South Korean people over the crash, he said.

The airline said it plans to launch a task force in Beijing to cope with the accident accordingly, but stopped short of confirming any casualties, except saying that the two Chinese victims were born in 1996 and 1997, respectively.

A spokesman for Asiana Airlines said the two killed Chinese teenagers were seated at the back of the plane.

San Francisco Fire Department Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the the two killed were found on "the exterior" of the plane.

Boeing expressed concern over the accident and said it will provide technical assistance to the investigation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed great concern over the accident and sent condolences to the Chinese victims and their families.

He instructed the Chinese embassy in the United States, the Chinese Consulate General in San Francisco, and the Chinese embassy in South Korea to work all out to accommodate the injured Chinese citizens and survivors and meanwhile keep in close contact with the U.S. and the South Korea side.

South Korean President Park Geun-hye offered her condolences to the families of passengers and said her government would make all necessary efforts to help handle the aftermath, according to her spokeswoman Kim Haing.

Caspian Energy announces election of Directors and provides listing update

Caspian Energy Inc. (TSX:CEK) announce that the nominees listed in the Corporation's management information circular dated May 14, 2013 (the "Circular") for the 2013 Annual and Special Meeting of Shareholders (the "Meeting") were elected as directors of Caspian. Detailed results of the vote for the election of directors held at the Meeting on July 2 in Calgary are set out below:

Caspian also announces that it has decided not to appeal the delisting decision of the Toronto Stock Exchange ("TSX"). In order to list or trade the common shares of Caspian on any exchange, the cease trade order issued by the Alberta Securities Commission will need to be lifted.
