Here?s How Sneaky Google Maps is Teasing Apple

With Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) chief executive Tim Cook having been forced on Friday to release an apology about the new iOS 6 maps app, Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) decided it was a good day to rub it in further. The search company announced the addition of high-resolution imagery, including a new 45-degree view, and improved data to its own mapping service.

?Our quest to create the most comprehensive and accurate map of the world is ongoing, but we?re happy to take a pause and share some impressive progress that our?Google Maps?and?Earth imagery teams have recently made,? Google geo data specialist Bernd Steinert said in a blog post on Friday. ?We?ve refreshed the high resolution?aerial and satellite imagery for many places around the world, and released some new 45 degree imagery as well.?

Apple has been a huge winning stock pick for Wall St. Cheat Sheet Newsletter subscribers. Don?t waste another minute ? click here and get more of our CHEAT SHEET stock picks now.

Both the Google Maps and Google Earth apps now feature 17 cities and 112 countries with high-resolution aerial and satellite imagery. In addition, 51 cities can now be viewed in a 45-degree mode. That includes 37 cities in the U.S. and 14 international locations. While the images cannot be rendered in three dimensions, unlike Apple?s Flyover feature, the new angle allows for a clearer view.

In his publicly issued apology on Friday, Cook acknowledged the user frustration of the last few days and recommended a variety of rival applications that customers could use as Apple worked on improving its software. The web version of Google and Nokia (NYSE:NOK) maps, as well the Microsoft?s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Bing app, were part of the list of suggestions.

Wall Street Week Ahead: Bulls eye Spain, Bernanke and jobs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street will open October with a busy week, highlighted by low expectations for global manufacturing data and the U.S. jobs report. Any positive surprises may help lift the market.

Spain is the wild card. And if it's played well, then the bulls might dance.

The S&P 500 <.inx><.spx> finished its third positive quarter in the last four on Friday, despite suffering its largest weekly percentage decline since June. For the past three months, the S&P 500 gained 5.9 percent - its best third quarter since 2010. In contrast, the index was down 1.3 percent for the week.

The benchmark S&P 500 earlier this month reached its highest level since late 2007. Yet uncertainty remains over whether stocks can hold their gains against the headwinds of a struggling economy. That explains, in part, the retreat over the last several days.

The S&P 500 hit a high of 1,474.51 in mid-September before pulling back by a bit more than 2 percent. A run at 1,500 seems possible, but the flurry of economic and world events ahead probably will prevent a major advance in the coming week.

Bulls are betting that last week's Spanish budget proposals will be a preamble to a bailout request by Mariano Rajoy's government. The move would be seen as a first step to get the finances of the euro zone's fourth-largest economy in order and would clear some of the market uncertainty regarding the euro zone crisis.

Monetary policy is also on the list of market catalysts this week. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke is scheduled to speak on Monday and the minutes of the latest FOMC meeting are set for release on Thursday. The week's agenda includes meetings of the European Central Bank, the Bank of England and the Bank of Japan.

Brian Jacobsen, chief portfolio strategist at Wells Fargo Funds Management in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, said he believes "we could see a rebound" this week "if we get some of the stars aligning and have Spain ask for a bailout, the ECB announcing favorable terms for that bailout, and if we see the Bank of Japan announce further monetary intervention.

"If Spain and the ECB don't deliver, we could set ourselves up for a further lateral move in the markets," Jacobsen added. "A negative would be if Rajoy flat-out denies that they need a bailout."

The ECB and BOJ are set to meet on Thursday, with the Bank of Japan's meeting extending until Friday.

FACTORIES, JOBS AND THE U.S. ELECTION

Chinese factory and business conditions data will kick off a numbers-heavy calendar for markets. Manufacturing PMI, due on Monday, is expected to show a second straight month of contraction.

A snapshot of U.S. manufacturing activity will be provided on Monday when the Institute for Supply Management releases its September index. The September ISM reading is expected to show another month of contraction, but at a slightly slower pace than in August. On Wednesday, the ISM will release its U.S. services-sector Purchasing Managers' Index, which could show a slight deceleration in the pace of growth in the non-manufacturing sector.

"We have Chinese economic data over the weekend, and we'll see how markets react on Monday," said Wasif Latif, vice president of equity investments at San Antonio, Texas-based USAA Investment Management.

"It seems like the market is bracing for bad numbers, meaning if they're not as bad, it could be market-positive," Latif said.

Non-farm payrolls for September, due on Friday, are forecast to gain 115,000, while the U.S. unemployment rate is seen ticking up 0.1 percent from August to 8.2 percent in September.

The jobs data will come on the heels of the first of three U.S. presidential debates, scheduled for Wednesday night.

With just one month to go before election day on November 6, Wall Street will watch the economic data more closely than it usually does. In a year when the incumbent president is campaigning for a second term, the country's economic numbers tend to become more positive as election day approaches.

The U.S. stock market also tends to gain in years when incumbents are re-elected, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

For the year, the Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> is up 10 percent, while the Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> is up 14.6 percent and the Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> is up 19.6 percent.

Recent poll numbers point to a strengthening lead by President Barack Obama, but a weak payrolls reading could give some hope to Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

"If Romney doesn't turn the ship with a very strong (debate)performance, the president is going to win," said Jack de Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

He said the trend in the polls has taken away some of the market uncertainty regarding the presidential election. He added that an ECB- or Spain-related headline out of Europe on Thursday could overcome almost anything that would happen Wednesday night during the debate.

"I think the market is coming to terms with the fact the president is ahead, and unless something significant changes, (he) will prevail."

Fake it 'til you make it? Nah. Focus on 'internal' success.

A shiny new car, fancy clothes, and a big house might indicate success to the outside world. But 'internal' financial success ? being debt free with a rewarding job, for instance ? will lead to greater security and happiness in the long run.?

If you saw him at the grocery store, you wouldn?t give him a second thought. Yet he?s got six going on seven figures in the bank, has no debt, and has a high-paying and technically-demanding job that he absolutely loves.

He?s what I like to call??internally successful.??He?s successful at the things that are largely internal to him and he?s happy with that.

On the other hand, another person I know constantly has a shiny new vehicle on a lease, has just about every recreational toy I can imagine, and dresses his children to the nines. At the same time, this person in so much debt that even a small reduction in income would result in debt payments missed within a few weeks.

This person might be externally successful, albeit a flavor that?s not paired with internal success.

People often want to?appear?successful. The idea of ?fake it until you make it? is very prevalent, and people often feel that they ?deserve? things.

The problem is that?external success is extremely fragile if you don?t have internal success backing it up.External success without internal success means that if even the smallest unexpected life event occurs, the facade collapses and you?re left with nothing.

If you want to be successful, build your internal success first.

Focus on debt freedom. Focus on building the career that you want. Focus on building lots of real relationships in your communities.

Don?t focus on the flashy house or the flashy car or the pile of toys.?Those things just delay internal success.

What are the rewards for internal success, though? Less stress. Fewer monthly bills. A lack of worry about keeping up appearances. A career that you have much more control over. A sense of pleasure from doing what you want to be doing.

Once you have internal success locked down, you can choose your flavors of external success.

What I?ve found, though, is that?external success has a lot less appeal once you?ve found internal success. You have the relationships you care about. You have the career that you want. You don?t have bills breathing down your neck.

Internal success brings internal peace, and that cuts the legs off of a desire for lots of external success.

The gassy halo engulfing the Milky Way, a comet in the neighborhood, and extraterrestrial rocks as the source of life on Earth

Web edition : 5:58 pm

Huge halo may hold missing matter
The Milky Way galaxy is cocooned inside an enormous cloud of hot gas, a finding that could solve a persistent astrophysical conundrum. Heated to more than 1 million degrees Celsius, the halo extends more than 300,000 light-years from the galactic center and contains at least as much mass as 10 billion suns, scientists report in the Sept. 1 Astrophysical Journal Letters. An international team of astronomers used NASA?s orbiting Chandra X-ray Observatory to detect hot, charged oxygen atoms. If verified, the halo?s size could solve what?s been called the ?missing baryon? problem: In the Milky Way and local neighborhood, at least half the expected baryons???normal subatomic particles like protons and neutrons???are unaccounted for. Now, scientists think these particles might be hiding in this and other superhot, gassy halos. ??Nadia Drake

Comet could dazzle or fizzle
The skies might blaze with a visitor shining more brightly than the moon beginning in November 2013. A large comet, called C/2012 S1, was discovered September 21 by the International Scientific Optical Network in Russia and confirmed September 24 by the International Astronomical Union?s Minor Planet Center in Cambridge, Mass. Also called Comet ISON, the icy traveler is currently outside the orbit of Jupiter and in the constellation Cancer, heading for a close encounter with the sun. As it whizzes by the sun, the comet?s frozen ingredients could evaporate and leave behind a long, spectacular tail???if it doesn?t begin breaking up before then. Though predicting cometary orbits is easy, predicting brightness is trickier, because that depends on how a comet behaves. Comet ISON has the potential to be the brightest observed from Earth in a century, ?or it could fizzle,? writes amateur astronomer Bill Gray in a guest blog post for the Planetary Society. ??Nadia Drake

Neighbors may have lent life
Life could have been brought to Earth aboard rocky chunks ejected from neighboring planetary systems. The idea, called lithopanspermia, is often viewed with derision or incredulity???but conditions in the early solar system may have been just right for such a thing to occur, Amaya Moro-Mart?n of Spain?s Centro de Astrobiolog?a reported at the European Planetary Science Congress in Barcelona on September 25. After considering the dynamic environment in the very young solar system and its proximity to neighboring planetary systems, Moro-Mart?n and colleagues concluded that life-bearing materials could be efficiently exchanged between systems if interstellar rocks traveled at slow speeds. In a related paper published September 12 in Astrobiology, the team calculates that more than a trillion rocks heavier than 10 kilograms could have traveled between the sun and its neighbors before the sun?s native star cluster dispersed. ??Nadia Drake

How to Beat 7 Common Self-Publishing Fears | Small Business ...

Posted on 27. Sep, 2012 by Ali Luke in Blog, Featured, Small Business Internet Marketing, Small Business Marketing

image of walt whitman, self-publisher

Maybe you?ve watched other bloggers launch their ebooks, and you want to do the same ? but something?s holding you back.

You probably already know the benefits of publishing an ebook ?

  • Establishing yourself as an expert author
  • Finally making real money from your blog
  • Creating a low-priced product to draw new customers in

You keep telling yourself that you will write an ebook someday ? just not yet. And it?s almost certainly the case that one of the seven common fears in this article is holding you back.

Staying stuck isn?t any fun, so let?s get right to it ?

Fear #1: I?m not ready

This is the biggest worry I hear from bloggers: I?m not ready.

All too often, the bloggers saying this are more than ready.

They?ve been blogging for six months, or a year, or longer.

Or they?re subject matter experts.

Or they?ve been writing for years or even decades.

Even if the longest thing you?ve written so far is a blog post, you probably are ready (or at least a lot closer to ready than you think).

Tip: Pick a date when you will begin your ebook, however unready you feel. Put it in your calendar.

Fear #2: I don?t know what to write about

This fear comes in two forms:

  • I have no ideas at all
  • I have so many ideas, I don?t know which to pick

The best way forward is to ask your audience.

Give them a list of your potential ideas and ask them to vote on their favorites. Even better, ask them what they?re struggling with, using open-ended questions.

Tip: Though open-ended questions are always best, you can use SurveyMonkey to run a multiple choice survey ? it?s free at the basic level, and quick and simple for your audience to use.

Fear #3: Nobody will buy it

No writer wants to pour weeks of work into an ebook ? only to find that sales are zero (or as close as makes no difference).

I can?t guarantee that your readers will buy your ebook. But if you?ve written what they want to read (see #2) instead of what you think they want, they?re very likely to snap it up.

You don?t have to sell hundreds of copies during your launch, either. Ebooks never go off: they can stay on a virtual shelf for months or years, bringing in regular income.

Tip: Don?t spend months and months on your ebook. Write something short, and aim to complete it within a couple of months ? or try the 30 Day ebook plan here.

Fear #4: It won?t be good enough

Perhaps you?re worried you don?t know enough. Perhaps you think your writing isn?t up to scratch. This fear is one that pretty much every first-time ebook writer suffers. (And plenty of umpteenth-time writers still find it hard to beat.)

Remember, your ebook doesn?t have to be the last word on your subject.

In fact, it?s much better (for you and your audience) to write an ebook that tackles one single topic ? not one that aims to be the only ebook they?ll ever need.

Also, you don?t have to go it alone.

Maybe there are a couple of chapters in your plan that fall outside of your personal experience. You can research those, interview an expert, or even ask someone else to contribute text for them.

Tip: Ask fellow writers, or some members of your audience, to act as ?beta-readers.? Get them to comment on your draft, and use their comments and suggestions to improve it.

Fear #5: I don?t understand the technology

If you?ve only just got to grips with WordPress, the thought of mastering the technology behind ebooks might put you off starting.

The great news is that ebooks are relatively easy to produce.

If you?re going to sell your ebook through your own blog, you can simply make a .pdf file that readers can view on their computer. (And you can hire a designer to make it look great.)

If you want to get your ebook into major online stores, like Amazon, there are a few extra steps to take ? but these are by no means insurmountable.

Amazon?s KDP (Kindle Direct Publishing) is straightforward to use, and Smashwords will help you format your ebook for distribution to other online stores.

Tip: There are plenty of individuals, plus companies like BookBaby, that can take your ebook manuscript and format it for you. Shop around and ask for recommendations.

Fear #6: I don?t have a big list

Yes, an email list is a powerful way to sell products ? but you don?t need to build a huge list before you can create your first ebook.

Even if your list only has a few dozen members ? or if you don?t have a list at all ? you can publish an ebook.

You can use other techniques, like guest posting, to get the word out there, and build up your list over time. After all, if you write the ebook first, you?ll have something for new members to buy.

Tip: Use a free chapter or two from your ebook as a sign-up incentive for your email list. This not only gives them a reason to join your list, it also helps nudge them towards buying.

Fear #7: I hate the idea of marketing

Some people are natural marketers: confident, charismatic, and with an instinctive grasp of what benefits will entice their audience.

Others ? probably most of us! ? find marketing uncomfortable at first.

Marketing may not come naturally to you, but you?re perfectly capable of it. Marketing your ebook simply means letting people know what it can do for them.

Some of your audience will decide not to buy, of course: perhaps they don?t need that particular book, or they don?t feel they have time to use it right now.

Others, though, will be delighted that you?re produced exactly what they need.

Tip: Focus on your audience in your marketing. Instead of trying to write about how great your ebook is, write about how it can help them.

If one of these fears has been holding you back, decide today how you?re going to move forward.

Drop a comment below to tell us your plans.

The Brick and Mortar of Local SEO

Brick and Mortar for SEO

As we?ve discussed during the earlier parts of our Local Series, directories and social networks are vital to getting your business found online.

Directories feed search engines the data that justifies your business? inclusion in the local results. Social networks get the word out to your customers and let you connect with them online.

But, before all of that, there are two things that need to be in place: an actual business and an actual website. Here?s the foundation you need to have down before you get started on your online strategy, based on some of the most frequent issues I?ve encountered with small businesses.

Preparing Your Business for Local SEO

Before you get listed in directories and before your customers like/follow/plus/pin you on their favorite social network, you need to be consistent with the information you?re putting out there.

  1. Know what your business name is going to be. Are you an LLC? A PLLC? An Inc? A TLDR;? If you?re a firm or a medical practice, are you going by a business name or by single professional?s name? Are you going to use an ampersand or write out the word ?and?? These small decisions can mean the difference between having a consistent, trusted online presence and having a dozen duplicate map markers pointing to different social and directory sites.
  2. Know what phone number you?re going to use. If you have multiple phone lines, you need to pick one. The phone number is the most consistent identifier for a local business, so having multiple ones out there can cause some of the biggest headaches in local search. Ideally, you should use a local phone number instead of a toll free number. Search engines understand area codes and use this to determine how local your business is.
  3. Know your address as it?s written in Google Maps. ?Start by doing a search for your actual street address in Google Maps. Google will likely spit out a variation on how you typed it ? use Google?s version. Now, if you have a suite number, add it to the address and write down. This is the exact address you want to use ? always. If you?re located on a highway, you?ll especially want to follow these steps since highways are frequently listed in several different ways.Google Maps Preferred Address

I typed our address one way, but Google prefers it another.

Using Your Website for Local SEO

While there are businesses that occasionally show up in local results simply from their Bing or Google listings, it?s pretty rare and generally inconsistent. Your website is your home base online, and search engines will look to it to help define your local listings. Mark sure your website shows the search engines what they need to see.

  1. Have one website. Singular. Nothing will confuse the search engines more than having a dozen microsites floating around claiming to be the official website for ?Your Business, Inc? located at 123 Bob Villa Blvd. Especially in local, there seem to be a lot of companies that set up these microsites claiming it will allow a small business to dominate the search results. Don?t listen to these people. These small websites have no authority, send mixed messages to the search engines about your business and can create a ton of duplicate content concerns.
  2. Mind the basics of SEO. Chances are you?re already targeting a specific town, community or neighborhood. So be sure to mention that area on your website. Name your city in the title tag and homepage content. And if you?re targeting multiple cities, know your limits. Google and Bing both go out of their way to only deliver search results within a few miles of the searcher. So if you?re targeting a city that?s 30 minutes away, you may want to instead focus on an area that?s a bit more realistic. To touch up on the other basics of SEO, you can start with this recent post.
  3. List your NAP. Remember that stuff I mentioned a few lines up about choosing your name, address and phone number? This is commonly referred to as your NAP (Name, Address, Phone number) and you?ll want to be sure to use it exactly as you wrote it down earlier. Google and Bing pay attention to how often your business is mentioned online. And the most important mention is on your actual website. Mention your full NAP on every page, especially the contact page. If you have multiple locations, give each location their own contact page so you can have one page devoted to each address individually.?To be even more thorough, you can use semantic markup to specifically call out your business contact information. Schema.org?is a great, nitpicky little markup that allows you to add some code to your website and label different parts of your content for the search engines. So by adding code like:

    <div itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/LocalBusiness">
    <span itemprop="name">Portent, Inc.</span>
    <span itemprop="description">An Internet marketing company in Seattle.</span>
    <div itemprop="address" itemscope itemtype="http://schema.org/PostalAddress">
    <span itemprop="streetAddress">506 2nd Ave, Suite 1700</span>,
    <span itemprop="addressLocality">Seattle</span>,
    <span itemprop="addressRegion">WA</span>
    </div>
    Phone: <span itemprop="telephone">206-575-3740</span>
    </div>

You can tell the search engines exactly where to find your contact information. You can read more about schema.org for local businesses here.

Everything I?ve mentioned here is based on issues I?ve seen multiple times with small businesses. Even though some of this might seem basic, problems at this level can take months to resolve. By simply spending the time to make sure these fundamentals are in place, you?re giving your business a distinct advantage over countless other small businesses online.

If you have any lingering questions about local search, take advantage of our Local SEO Q&A and post your question in the comments below. Remember, we?ll be compiling all of the questions and responses on October 2nd in a special blog post!

NEW YORK (AP) ? "The Casual Vacancy" (Little, Brown and Company), by J.K. Rowling.

So look, here's the thing: This. Is. Not. A. Children's. Book. If you're looking for what made Harry Potter magical ? Wizards! Spells! Flying Broomsticks! ? you're not going to find it.

If you're looking for what makes J.K. Rowling magical ? emotion, heart ? you will.

"The Casual Vacancy" is the first novel written for adults from Rowling, the successful-beyond-belief author behind the "Harry Potter" series about the young boy who discovers he's a wizard.

Published in the U.S. by Little, Brown and Company and in Britain by Little, Brown Book Group, "The Casual Vacancy" is scheduled to come out Thursday and has been held under tight control, with media outlets required to sign non-disclosure agreements before being permitted to see the book. The Associated Press declined to sign such an agreement and instead purchased a copy early.

Already at No. 2 on Amazon, the book has gotten early buzz from PG-13 references to sex and drugs that might be a tad mature for the youngest "Potter" fans.

It is set in the small British village of Pagford, and tells the story of what happens after the unexpected death of a town official leaves a vacancy on the town's governing body. A long-simmering conflict over what the solidly middle-class village should do about the residents of a poverty-stricken, drug- and crime-infested housing project on the edge of town gets heated, interwoven with the personal lives and problems of Rowling's characters.

This is not a book that's easy to fall in love with, the way Harry Potter was with its charming, winning hero and his plucky friends, saving the world from evil with the help of a powerful spell or two.

Even with its moments of humor, it's a hard story where some people just don't get saved, because really, they never had a chance. It's filled with often-unlikeable people, some of whom cross the line into terrible. They're all unhappy in one way or another, even if the only people who know that are themselves, if that. They can be judgmental, mean, petty and violent. Some are damaged beyond repair. Even the deceased official, in some ways the most positive, moral force in the story, is shown to have hurt his wife with his dedication to his cause that clearly came at her emotional expense.

But what could have been an unreadable story becomes something else in Rowling's hands, thanks to her gift of being able to make her characters complex and really, just human.

Readers know these people. They're familiar, with their moments of lashing out in anger or hoping against hope that this time things will be different. They're people the reader feels something for, even it's just pity, because they're struggling, because life can be hard and sometimes there just aren't any breaks, because even people who look like nothing but trouble can do something good. A number of her characters are teenagers, trying to figure out their places in the world, with all the emotional peaks and valleys that can bring.

That ability to bring her characters to their emotional life was a hallmark of the Harry Potter series ? it didn't become a global phenomenon just because it was an exciting adventure, but because there was a real heart to it, characters who had both strengths and weaknesses, who struggled with their choices.

That's what makes this book worth it, despite a slow start and sometimes too much of the descriptions and adjectives that added life to Harry Potter but at times tend to bog Rowling down here. That's what makes the book's ending scenes so heartbreaking ? turning the page seems unbearable, but not as much as putting down the book would be.

Its Ladies Week, Women in Domaining (Part 1) - Hybrid Domainer

By: RH

Welcome to our five part series "Women in Domaining"

The domaining industry is a predominantly male industry, from those running registrars to secondary exchanges, to individuals in the spotlight. We wanted to do a story on women in the industry and let them tell their story in their own words.

We have reached out to ladies all over the domain spectrum, from executives to entrepreneurs to part timers who have made their way in the industry.

We edited nothing, we wanted each lady to express herself and tell their own story. We did ask each lady one question, "Do you feel that domaining is an equal opportunity industry for men and women alike ?"

First up is Lori Anne Wardi from .CO Registry. Lori Anne is the marketing force behind the .co extension. With an Ivy League background and time spent at Goldman Sachs, she somehow found her way to the domaining industry.

?

CoimageCoimageI? work full time as VP for .CO, where I am responsible for matters involving brand strategy, business development and global communication.? My biggest job is preaching the gospel of .CO around the world-- and trying to inspire more individuals and businesses to go.co!? A part of the .CO team from the very start, I have helped to do deals with big brands (like Twitter, Google, Cisco and Amazon) and to help to introduce many of Silicon Valley?s biggest influencers and hottest startups to the growing world of .CO -- one URL at a time, including: 500 Startups (500.co), Angel List (angel.co), The Founder Institute (fi.co), Launch Conference (launch.co), and The Startup America Partnership (s.co).

Beyond that, I have been a domain investor since around year 2000. I love researching domain names, and buying and selling names for myself and others.?

I guess you can say I work in domains full time as a career; and I invest in domains part time -- and these days, more as a hobbyist.

Re domaining as an industry, i think it's definitely an equal opportunity industry -- and a great place for women.? While there are clearly far more men in the industry I think it's because women have seen domaining as a guys field ... filled with geeks!? When i started attending domain industry events, there were practically no women there-- but the guys were welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful. Over time, the opportunities for women and the number of women in the industry has continued to grow.? And I think it will keep growing -- as women continue to see that being geeky is not just for the guys!

Next up is Tia Wood, Tia is an entrepreneur with great graphic design and development skills. She has developed many sites for other professionals in the domaining industry.

TiawoodI invest in domain names part time and have been for the past 6+ years. It goes hand in hand with my full time web development career as I make purchasing decisions and advise clients on various aspects of their projects.

I definitely feel there is equal opportunity for both men and women in the domain industry. I have never faced any type of discrimination from being a woman.

However, I feel that women have different advantages and disadvantages, in general, participating in a male dominated industry.

For instance, the female gender has the advantage in a male dominated field of simply being a different gender ( as an exaggerated, joking example:? http://www.tiawood.com/domain-investing/male-domainers-vs-female-domainers.html ). While I myself stay clear of this route there is no denying that it happens and the domain industry is no exception. The most rememberable example is when Chef Patrick employed those lovely models in his videos: http://www.chefpatrick.com/nipplegate-scandal-and-photo-shoot-pics/ (which I'm sure everyone is hoping would come back).

On the reverse side, you need thick skin to deal with the good and bad criticism, unwanted advice, things that are typical in any business industry.

Next up is Annalisa Roger/Dot Green. Annalisa has been a driving force behind the Green Movement and it finding its own namespace in the new tld program.

DotgreenDotgreenMy first exposure to domain names was through my father, Peter de Blanc who was a believer in the power of information and strong advocate for all people to gain global information at their fingertips.? Through his excitement as the Internet was new, he pioneered its expansion to the Virgin Islands, and engaged at ICANN with other country code Top Level Domain (ccTLD) managers. The Virgin Islands Public Telecommunications System relies on COBEX Internet Services, a local organization founded by my father.? My step-mother, Dotty Sparks deBlanc continues to oversee the .vi Registry and is a Board Member of the Country Code Names Supporting Organization or ccNSO at ICANN.

My domain experience is unusual in that it is limited to developing one Top Level Domain. I have embarked on an interesting journey based on a simple idea.? Since founding a company, the DotGreen team has developed partnerships and even created a new Non-profit Public Benefit Charity Organization in order to responsibly manage an entire domain namespace; the letters to the right of the dot will be ?green?.? For example, The DotGreen Community, Inc. www.dotgreen.org? will work with registrars, who will sell new domain names such as: cars.green, energy.green, house.green, Iam.green , etc.? Domain names to the left of .green can purchased by Internet users, registrants and domainers who may develop them into thriving businesses.? As a woman TLD entrepreneur, I recognize this unique opportunity to share and encourage other women around the world to develop .green domain names into websites and to bring their green businesses online and to create new businesses through domain developing.? I believe this can create social, economic, and environmental value for communities around the world as well as adding authenticity and strength to the .green TLD brand.

Domaining may currently be primarily a male dominated industry, yet it is clear that women are welcome and beginning to find careers in that niche. Recent domainer conferences have even hosted ?women in domaining? events to increase the pool of domainers.? This is a smart move, one I would recommend to registrars as sponsors wanting to increase their client base and domain names sales revenue.

Domain Developing is a complex component to Domaining and requires a set of skills and innovative thinking already well mastered by many creative entrepreneurs.?? I believe Domain Developing (different than Domaining) is well suited for women.? Necessary skills require one to have an intuitive sense of community building and the ability to generate interest (called traffic) around a particular idea or word (the domain name). Women are recognized for their aptitudes in working with people, including social media fields, communications, and abilities to understand and interact with group think.? These natural skills most definitely translate to the field of Domain Developing.? The Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers, ICANN is on the cusp of the greatest domain expansion for the Internet name space that has ever taken place.? Around 1400 new generic Top Level Domains and therefor countless new domain names in many languages are expected online in the next year or so.? We are living in a time in history which brings with it a great opportunity and choice for women Domain Developers (at the second level).? With many new gTLD name spaces soon to come online, women domain developers can plan now to learn the skills needed to be valuable contributing pioneers to the development of new online communities that are meaningful to them.

Benefits for women: I think Domain Developing from her home office is a career path that can be well suited for women seeking flexibility in their career.? For those who want more involvement with the public, there are Domaining conferences, workshops, speaking engagements, even a Domaining cruise!? Hard work is required and there is a lot to learn around design appeal, user interface, search engine optimization (SEO) and social media to be successful.? An entrepreneur can find valuable information online and there are some very helpful blogs to subscribe to in this dynamic industry.?? For anyone currently making a transition from strictly Domaining which can be more of a risk based business such as stock trading, to Domain Developing, they may want to consider the statistics of who really browses and shops online?? Is your website likely to be visited by women traffic?? Is it attractive? Welcoming? Some may consider partnering with a woman Domain Developer as a way to gain an advantage.? Chances are she?ll be good at collaborating, attracting visitors, building community and will offer a valuable additional perspective.

The Myth That Healthy Foods Automatically Causes Weight Loss

Although there are some people that blog and lose weight using a set program like NutriSystem or Jenny Craig, it seems that the majority of folks I read lose weight, or have lost weight, using foods they prepare themselves.

I love the fact that I see so many bloggers and friends I know striving to make healthy choices. I see delicious vegetables, tempting salads, fabulous healthy main dishes, and little tastes of desserts now and then.

I also notice that some of you who are eating mainly healthy foods seem to be having trouble getting that scale to move on down.

There is a temptation in weight loss world to automatically apply this equation to weight loss.

Eating healthy = Losing weight

In my opinion, for what it is worth, I believe that equation is a myth.

Simply eating healthy, less processed foods, will not automatically lead to weight loss. Why? Because it is absolutely possible to eat too many calories from healthy foods. And if you are trying to lose a few pounds, or even maintain your weight, too many calories, whether from healthy or unhealthy foods, can frustrate your weight management efforts.

The Magic of Portions

Foods that are unprocessed or lightly processed definitely have a positive effect on your health and are better for your body than foods with a ton of sodium, added sugars, and the chemicals that make up so many processed foods. However, as you read labels and make healthy choices, it?s vital that you not forget one thing.

Portion control. These two words have been one of the keys to me maintaining my weight for all these years. I always pay attention to portion sizes, whether I?m having a fancy salad, a grilled chicken entree, and especially desserts or other calorie dense food. It is very easy for me to overeat any food, but while most of us know that eating huge desserts can frustrate our weight management efforts, it is easy to forget that we need to be aware of portion sizes with all the foods we eat.

Now granted it would take a lot of salad to throw off your calories for the day, but it wouldn?t take a lot of extra whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, nuts, low-fat cheese, oils, Greek yogurt, dried fruits, hummus, or other such calorie dense healthy food.

I?ve been out to dinner with friends who point out that they are going to have one of the ?healthier ?entrees from the menu. But oftentimes, the healthy entree is still way too large in terms of portions. I am always interested to see what they will do. Most of the time they eat the entire thing because it is healthy. I?ve seen it happen not only in restaurants, but in my own house. We will have someone over for dinner and I?ll make a healthy meal as usual. Even if my friend is trying to lose weight she will load up her plate and eat it all.

It?s almost like a healthy food trap waiting to happen. Healthy food still has calories, and I believe it is important to remember to apply portion control to all the foods we eat to ensure we are not only getting the right balance of calories and nutrients, but also to help meet our weight management goals.

As you walk your journey, you may find your weight loss stalling or see the scale creeping up. If this is your place right now, the first thing I?d look at is your portion sizes. It is so easy to let a few larger servings of healthy or unhealthy foods into our diets, and those 200 or 300 calories a day can make a difference in our weight over time.

Do you think there is the assumption that healthy foods always equal weight loss? Do you have to watch your portion sizes?? Diane

Klash Is The App To Make Your Friends Dare-Double-Dare You

04_skirmishEverything old is new again... at least in 2012, where some of the new businesses that launch these days seem -- to some jaded eyes -- to be a little, well, familiar. But, we are assured, it's all going to be different this time. Thus, back in 2007/08 a startup called Bragster tried and tried to make "dares" between friends a social platform. You could brag about your awesome dares! And? and? Anyway, there is a new kid on the block that wants to do something ever so similar. But can iOS app Klash [iTunes link] crack the P2P bragging nut? Let's see.

Florida wants NASA land to develop commercial spaceport

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - With an eye toward developing a commercial spaceport, Florida has asked NASA to transfer 150 acres of land north of the shuttle launch pads and the shuttle runway to Space Florida, the state's aerospace development agency.

"Florida believes that the properties identified in this request are excess to the needs of the U.S. government," Lieutenant Governor Jennifer Carroll, who is also chairwoman of Space Florida, wrote in letter to NASA chief Charles Bolden and Ray LaHood, secretary of Department of Transportation, which oversees commercial space transportation in the United States.

The letter, dated September 20, was posted on the state's Sunburst public records website.

A week earlier, Space Florida agreed to spend $2.3 million for environmental studies, land surveys, title searches, appraisals and other activities to lay the groundwork for Cape Canaveral Spaceport, a proposed state-owned commercial complex that would be licensed by the Federal Aviation Administration and operated like an airport.

"If we want to be satisfied with 10 to 12 government launches a year, I don't have to do anything," Space Florida president and chief executive Frank DiBello told Reuters.

But he said those launches would likely end when commercial sites elsewhere are able to offer affordable rates.

"What has existed for decades has been good, but the marketplace has been largely governmental. What commercial market there was, we have essentially lost overseas. I'm not only anxious to bring some of that back, but I'm anxious for the next-generation of providers, both the launch companies and the satellite owner-operators, to have Florida be the place where they seek to do business," DiBello said.

Similar commercial spaceports have been set up in New Mexico, where Virgin Galactic, an offshoot of Richard Branson's Virgin Group, plans to fly a fleet of suborbital passenger spaceships, as well as Alaska, Virginia and California.

Commercial space launches from Cape Canaveral Air Force Base in Florida and from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, both of which can accommodate bigger rockets and more diverse payloads than the other sites, are subject to military oversight.

Florida's request comes as NASA is working to revamp the Kennedy Space Center following the end of the shuttle program last year. It also is timed to woo privately owned Space Exploration Technologies, or SpaceX, to build its third launch site in Florida.

The company, founded and run by Internet entrepreneur Elon Musk, currently flies its Falcon rockets from a refurbished and leased pad at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It is preparing to activate a second launch site at Vandenberg before the end of the year and is looking to build a third launch pad in a commercial zone.

Out of a backlog of 42 Falcon 9 flights, worth about $4 billion, 65 percent are for commercial and non-U.S. government customers, Brian Bjelde, SpaceX director of product and mission management, said at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics conference in Pasadena, California, earlier this month.

An environmental study of a site in Brownsville, Texas, near the Mexican border, is under way. SpaceX also is looking at sites in Puerto Rico, Hawaii and other states, Bjelde said.

SHILOH REVISITED

In 1989, Florida proposed building a commercial launch pad north of the space shuttle complex in an area known as Shiloh, an old citrus-growing community that straddles Brevard County to the south and Volusia County to the north.

That initiative was hastily shut down by environmentalists' concerns over scrub jay habitats and other issues.

"This site is not exactly the same. We were going after a lot more land then," DiBello said.

"What we are seeking is a collaborative effort and we want to do that early on so they're all involved and all part of the dialog. This includes the Department of Interior and wildlife and refuge community," DiBello said.

Some of the requested land is believed to be owned by Florida, which lays claim to about 56,000 acres of the 140,000 acres that comprise the Kennedy Space Center and the surrounding Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge.

The federal government was allowed use of the land for the national space program, with the caveat that it would revert back to the state if it was no longer needed for NASA's purposes.

NASA never developed the Shiloh site.

Space Florida already has an agreement with NASA to operate one of the three space shuttle processing hangars.

DiBello said cost estimates to develop a new launch site at Shiloh were not yet available. Though Space Florida is, in part, a special municipal district, with powers to tax and sell bonds, the agency is not looking at levying taxes for spaceport development, DiBello said.

"Right now we hope that we could keep SpaceX here, but there are others that will be coming into the marketplace, I'm convinced," he said.
