Obtaining information more important than friendships for Japanese Facebookers

Do you disclose your real name on SNSs? graph of japanese statisticsThe results of this survey from goo Research into SNS (Social Networking Service) usage as reported by japan.internet.com produces a couple of headscratch-worthy results, the one in the title and that maintaining friendships is more important than deepening them.

Demographics

Between the 8th and 11th of May 2012 1,076 members of the goo Research online monitor group completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 52.8% of the sample were male, 15.9% in their teens, 18.6% in their twenties, 21.6% in their thirties, 16.3% in their forties, 15.7% in their fifties, and 12.0% aged sixty or older.

On second thoughts, perhaps maintaining is more important than deepening or widening from a Japanese perspective? Class reunions, for instance, are a regular feature of many people?s lives here, for all of primary, secondary and tertiary education levels. Perhaps these events are viewed more as an obligation, thus Facebook and mixi provide an easy way to link together and fulfil one?s societal role?

For me, both obtaining and generating information is most important, but that?s more because I am an anti-social git?

Research results

First, from the original sample, 574 people (or 53.3%) were currently using an SNS; note that goo Research usually categorises Twitter as one, but sadly this report did not detail which ones people actually did use. These 574 were then asked the following.

Q1: Do you disclose your real name on SNSs? (Sample size=574)

Yes, on all 27.2%
No, on none 46.0%
Yes on some, no on others 26.8%

Q2: What are your objectives for communicating on an SNS? (Sample size=574, multiple answer)

? Votes Percentage
Want to obtain valuable information 264 46.0%
Want to maintain friendships with friends 254 44.3%
Want to get to know people with compatible hobbies 226 39.4%
Want to deepen friendships with friends 219 38.2%
Want to generate, share information 161 28.0%
Want to widen my network of work, etc, contacts 55 9.6%
Other 11 1.9%
Nothing in particular 71 12.4%

Next, the sample 574 were asked what sorts of things they apply themselves to regarding using an SNS. The top there answers were 238 people saying they without fail try to log on every day, 118 take care not to post too much or too little, and 117 actively try to reply to friends? posts. On the other hand, 209 people didn?t try to do make sure they did anything in particular.

Small Business Marketing and Market Research Made Easy

Delicious Digg Facebook LinkedIn reddit StumbleUpon Twitter Bit.ly Email PDFmyURL

The key to your financial success lies in finding and building your business network. The richest people in the world are looking for networks and build them; also they know how to keep them! All others are job seekers. Business marketing and market research can separate you from this crowd of job seekers. The difference between winners and losers is determined by the finish line. Winners do not care whether they came to finish line first or last. They only care to cross! Losers give up before they even tried.

Marketing knowledge is crucial if you intend to start your own business or thinking about the possibilities of starting it. Small business marketing is important part of everyday business activities. Definition of business marketing is used to describe activity of different individuals or organizations, including marketing and other companies, governments and institutions to facilitate the sale of their products or services to other companies or organizations. Business marketing is also known as industrial marketing, business-to-business marketing or B2B marketing.

Marketing or small business marketing knowledge can be seen as set of skills which you can obtain and used in order to attract large number of buyers from the market, you will also learn how to keep them. If you want to directly impact your companies profit and also gain expertise in one of the most dynamic business area, this section is for you.

The methodology of marketing is very much changing, because of increased use of computers and the Internet. Large number of customers is now targeted this way, using various popular sites, like Facebook for example. On the other hand, the use of new marketing methods is multiplying the impact and the market becomes stronger than before with much higher profit. However, only companies that are capable and know how to do it as well as highly paid professionals can apply this new knowledge in certain way that can bring them really high profit.

There is a reason why is so. The Department of documentary research Cambridge University found that the average person in the urban environment receives between 1,500 and 3,000 promotional messages per day. Investments in advertising grow at impressive rate, but it also reduces confidence in the ads. The budget for local advertising company has doubled in the last four years, but regardless, the force of the marketing attack on the investment market is melted down because potential customers distrust. One out of eight TV viewers believes that television ads are truthful regarding the product. This trend of declining confidence is evident in every medium, including the Internet.

In response to these trends, the current marketing practices of an enterprise provide a strong influence on the market. The new method provides significant cash returns on investment in attracting customers. One well-known local company last year led a campaign that brought traffic to 40 euros each euro invested. These are numbers that every manager or business owner dreams of.

Main objective of every marketing course is to teach students about the concept of business marketing as well as the strategies used. It also explains the difference between business and consumer marketing. Education will provide tools for understanding the customer, implementation of knowledge to create appropriate products, services and offers. You will also learn methods of selecting the best way to deliver a message and real product/service value to customers.

You will be able to provide high cash flow and attract more clients to you or the company you work for.

What?s happened since the last No Way Out?

The last No Way Out before this year?s, the 2009 edition, saw both World Championships change hands inside the Elimination Chamber. Edge lost the WWE Championship in a Chamber match eventually won by Triple H. Then, the Rated-R Superstar went on to not only steal Kofi Kingston?s spot in the World Heavyweight Championship Elimination Chamber, but also win that bout.

So, what?s changed since Feb. 15 2009? Titles ? many times over.

Between then and now (May 23, 2012), the WWE Title has changed hands 21 times and the World Heavyweight Championship 22 times, respectively. Going further down the card, the Intercontinental Championship has changed ownership 15 times, the United States Championship 13 times, the WWE Tag Team Championships 13 times and the Divas Championship 15 times.

Sony exec confirms IPTV aspirations, says they're on hold due to bandwidth caps

Sony exec reportedly confirms IPTV aspirations, says they're on hold due to bandwidth caps

CES came and went without an update on the status of an alleged cable TV alternative the Wall Street Journal claimed Sony was building to push ahead its four screen strategy, but now Sony Network Entertainment VP Michael Aragon has given the rumor new life. Variety reports that during its Entertainment & Technology Summit Monday Aragon confirmed the company is considering offering TV services over the internet, but is waiting to see what happen with ISP bandwidth caps. Specifically referring to the Comcast 250GB limit that has recently come under fire from Netflix and others now that its Xfinity TV app on Xbox 360 skirts the cap entirely, Aragon noted cable companies have the pipe and the bandwidth and can restrict competing services. We've heard Netflix has been trying to negotiate its own path around such restrictions even as Redbox partners with Verizon on a video service, and rumors have periodically popped up linking Apple, Microsoft and any other tech giant you could name to similar plans. What does all this mean for the future? No one can say for sure yet, but unless some of the key players start to partner up instead of go to war we may need the FCC to step in before anything significant changes.

Bobby Brown Didn't Get Whitney Houston 'Addicted' To Drugs

'I'm not the reason she's gone,' singer's ex-husband tells Matt Lauer in upcoming 'Today' show chat.

Their relationship may have been tumultuous and their struggles with substance abuse well-documented, but Bobby Brown insists that he is not the reason ex-wife Whitney Houston started doing drugs, a habit that she battled right up until her death in February.

"I'm not the one that got Whitney on drugs, at all," Brown told "Today" host Matt Lauer in an interview set to air on Wednesday and Thursday. "I'm not the reason she's gone."

Brown admitted that when he learned of his ex's death, he was saddened to hear she had started using cocaine again.

"I was hurt ... because, you know, me being off of narcotics for the last seven years — I felt that she was, you know, I didn't know she was struggling with it still. But at the same time, you know — listen, it's a hard fight," he said.

Regarding his involvement in Houston's drug use, Brown said that drugs were a part of Houston's life before they met in 1991. "I smoked weed, I drank the beer, but no, I wasn't the one that got Whitney on drugs at all," he insisted. "It's just, it's just unexplainable, how one could [say that I] got her addicted to drugs. I'm not the reason she's gone."

The New Edition member said that Houston seemed to have "a glow about her" the last time he saw her over dinner at a restaurant with their daughter, Bobbi Kristina, which was about a week before she died.

"She just looked like she was in a good place," he said.

Not all altruism is alike, says new study

Not all altruism is alike, says new study [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 30-Apr-2012

Creatures should help each other in different ways in tight times versus times of plenty

Durham, NC Not all acts of altruism are alike, says a new study. From bees and wasps that die defending their nests, to elephants that cooperate to care for young, a new mathematical model pinpoints the environmental conditions that favor one form of altruism over another.

The model predicts that creatures will help each other in different ways depending on whether key resources such as food and habitat are scarce or abundant, say researchers from Indiana University and the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center in Durham, North Carolina.

Examples of creatures caring for others at the expense of themselves are well-known. Ants, bees, and some birds will help their relatives raise kids rather than raise kids of their own. Even the simplest of social creatures, such as single-celled bacteria and slime molds and other microbes, sometimes sacrifice their own well-being for the sake of their group.

Most mathematical models of how cooperation comes to be assume that all forms of altruism provide similar perks. But the benefits of altruism are different for different behaviors, said study author Michael Wade, a professor at Indiana University and a visiting scholar at the National Evolutionary Synthesis Center.

For example, some creatures cooperate for the sake of defense, others to find food, and others to care for young, he explained.

In a new study, Wade and collaborator J. David Van Dyken of Indiana University model the full range of altruistic behaviors to identify the environmental conditions that favor one type of altruism over another.

Their results show that when key local resources such as food or habitat are scarce, altruistic behaviors that provide more of those resources, or that use them more efficiently, will be favored. Think of lions banding together to hunt and take down prey, or honey bees sharing their findings as they forage for food. Many animals guide other members of their group to newly discovered meals, or bring food back to share with their nest mates.

But when resources are abundant, altruistic behaviors that help other individuals live longer, or produce more offspring, will give organisms an edge. Animals such as songbirds, ungulates and chimpanzees, for example, make alarm calls to warn nearby group members of approaching predators, braving danger to protect others.

As local resources wax and wane, one form of altruism may shift to another over time.

"But the bottom line is that the way creatures are likely to help each other when times are tight is different from how they're likely to help each other in times of plenty," Wade said.

Sony Xperia PLAY (Verizon) getting updated -- still not ICS

Xperia PLAY

Sony and Verizon are pushing out an update for the Xperia PLAY, bringing it to version 4.0.2.E.0.57. Relax, 4.0.2 is the version number from Sony and not Android 4.0.2 -- but don't feel bad, I thought the same thing.

While the update may not be the one everyone is waiting for, it does bring a couple nice things to the table -- new versions of Verizon Navigator and Verizon Video on Demand! I'll stop. There is something cool in this update though -- use the right trigger button to take a picture while running the camera app. The rest you ask? Certainly.

  • Verizon Wireless Video on Demand now comes preloaded.
  • Improved user experience and new delivery method of preloaded games.
  • When connected via Bluetooth®, the Music Player now supports Fast Forward and Rewind.
  • VZ Navigator® has been updated with the latest 3D map improvements.
  • Upgraded to Gingerbread 2.3.4 operating system.
  • A long-press of the power button will successfully capture a screen shot.
  • Charging issues forcing device to remain in landscape mode have been resolved.
  • Recommended contacts now populate correctly when using the dialpad.
  • Right trigger successfully captures a picture.
  • Record video in 720p with continuous auto-focus.
  • Device is now enabled with the Wireless Emergency Alerting System.
  • Mobile Hotspot ID broadcast can be turned off to increase security.

Start mashing on the system update button, and holler out in the forums when you see it!

Source: Verizon. Thanks everyone who sent this in!
